    The correct Radio-Shack model number should be 63-3006 or even 630-3006. If this model uses 3- 9 volt batteries , and you have ferrous-non ferrous on your analog meter it is a 63-3006 !!! If it uses 6 AA batteries it is another model.......So the model number 63-3003 , I posted above is wrong !!!!!!See the little notepad with the correct specs , and sorry for my earlier error on the model number.
    Esteban ,After you solder the new inductors in place. With the batteries not connected turn on the unit , then all the controls mid-range , take an ohmeter reading with your DVM across the battery terminals , make sure nothing else is shorted before you re-apply power. As you can see the specs say 30-35 milli-amps is normal , anything much higher is not good. Anyway, you also have Excellent electronic troubleshooting knowledge ,so you will not have any problems repairing this Detector............Eugene

    I see !!! It looks now like they are the same. ...If you have both detectors in front of you , very easy !! If you just have photos it can be hard. Anyway , he needs to find a Schematic that has 6 -I.C.s not 5. Or a clear photo to see the color bands of the good inductors that are not burned out. I wonder if the detector has more damage than just the inductors????....More people will be posting , Esteban should have enough information soon , to fix his detector............Eugene

    The pcb in the bottom photo is the same as the top photo. The bottom photo has been reversed. If you look closely the writing is backwards on the bottom photo. And at the place of the "missing" IC is a lot of white wax. The end of the IC can be just seen next to the resistor to the right of the potentiometer.

    Everyone is right !!! Nobody is Wrong !!! . Ok , Here is the reason : The first maker of Estebans Radio-Shack VLF 15. khz Are the Japenese !!! Number is 630-3003 the detector is called Micronta-4003. TOP PHOTO , look at the color of the circuit board . And it has 6 I.C. chips. Then look at KT315 photos below , Clearly your Chinese Brown circuit board But only 5 I.C.s !!!!! Somebody at Radio-Shack switched Vendors !!!But we still need the correct schematic for Estebans special "630-3003"..And it does not match Ivconics Detector we were looking for a month ago. So we have 2 more Versions ???......Eugene

    Esteban , Did you turn over the PCB Board and see a 63-3003 number ??? or something close to it ??? Somewhere on that board , has got to be etched that 63- or 630- number.......I will copy the photo , and see if it matches any of my radio shack schematics..........Bye.........Eugene

    Actually it seems it is the very same detector only pcb differs a bit. And of course enclosure of MD3007 is much more modern....

    Looks like something between Micronta 4003 and MD3007. MD3007 has 2 leds along with Vu meter. Also IC' are all there, as on MD3007.
    Burned choke...might be due reversed battery pins?
    What is the frequency of that detector?
    I would not be suprised if it is 15kHz...
    Also coil is same as on 4003 and 3007 models....

    inductors are made of wire... thin wires there... small boundles....
    current flows inside the wires and that create heat.

    Now if you use a detector for 3-4hours is not a problem... but if you put it in garage and forget to switch-off device... it's not so strange that something will melt or burn due to heat generated, expecially if at power stage, like audio and similar stuff like TX, where current is higher than in signal paths.

    I think someone forget it ON with full, big battery set for long time and inductors melt after a very long run.

    This will be expecially in some hot climate like Paraguay has and with such a toy-detector.

    What causes it?

    imho, a battery was misconnected. even if owner only touched contacts of battery on connector it will be enough to burn the inductors off.
