The correct Radio-Shack model number should be 63-3006 or even 630-3006. If this model uses 3- 9 volt batteries , and you have ferrous-non ferrous on your analog meter it is a 63-3006 !!! If it uses 6 AA batteries it is another model.......So the model number 63-3003 , I posted above is wrong !!!!!!See the little notepad with the correct specs , and sorry for my earlier error on the model number.
Esteban ,After you solder the new inductors in place. With the batteries not connected turn on the unit , then all the controls mid-range , take an ohmeter reading with your DVM across the battery terminals , make sure nothing else is shorted before you re-apply power. As you can see the specs say 30-35 milli-amps is normal , anything much higher is not good. Anyway, you also have Excellent electronic troubleshooting knowledge ,so you will not have any problems repairing this Detector............Eugene

Nelson, The modification for this 63-3006ss should be identical to the 63-3005 modification posted a few months ago. Kt315 will translate the russian page when he reads your post above, if not I will post some of the information later...These are the 4 "Cheapest" Micronta VLF'S from Radio Shack that I know of. And now a bunch are being "Made in China" for Harbor Freight , Vellemans, and the Famous Trails in the last photo which is identical to Estebans also !!!...........Eugene

i had the 4001 years ago i found an old coil drawing i made, this is it if it helps anyone out. you have to put the 2 small and 2 big coils on top of each other.

have seen the 4003 posted a few times here , that's the "more advanced" model with 3x9v batteries and very different to the 4001 with 6xaa's , 2 knobs , 1 button.

suspect there will be some similarities , my TX drive doesnt have a diode , i don't think.

finding info on the 4001 is difficult , do you think it's a rare model , may have collectors value , certanly doesn't have much use value at the moment .

allthough nice case and meter , may gut it and install new board / coil .

just been reading this thread regarding varius micronta detectors ,

has anyone got the schematic for the 4001 model ??

i have the 4001 model , and would like to study schematic and try to make it better so it's more useable ,

the coil is also a little confusing if anyone has some info on it , looks like standard arangement with bucking coil , but when testing , it would appear that the RX is connected to the TX , about 8 ohms or there abouts , confusing.

have tried to give her more power by changing the TX transistor to a higher gain higher power type , but with no real success , still only 4 inches on a 20mm nickle or copper coin.

any info greatfully recieved , i use a home built PI and "the boy" uses the 4001 , we also use it for pinpointing and FE indication , but due to the lack of depth he is getting bored with the hobby , it's like fishing , catch a fish , hooked for life , so would like to improve on the destign if possible.

the detector on the white table with just the two controls the one i have looks like it.it has only six transistors in it no ic's.it is quite sensitive for small items.it has md -89n made in china.

Hello Nelson , I think your detector is very similar to the schematic of the "Shadow project" I posted here ...I think It is one of the best vlf detector projects Carl has posted over on the Thunting site . For 1980 , this was ahead of its Time . The shadow article says it detected a single coin to 12 inches maybe??? Anyway check out the very close 'similarities" and best of luck............Eugene51

yes it was interesting. Coil data are not available from the article but I think really it was capable of 12'' in air detection over a coin like an half-crown (32mm).

It was also about simple respect to others but sure with good disc features.

I think it's limitation was about the 4 batteries required... not that good , and of course, weight issues and complexity during use.

Yes, people who know this detector, said that has a good hiden potencial after a few mods.
I ll follow your advices to see if i can make this MD work has a champ.
Russian id hard for me to translate, so i just tryied online translators, but this is not has good has a native speaker translation.
I wich some of the good friends here can traslate my previus post to english.

Nelson , Your English is not bad . Your Russian is Perfect !!! You made a "Big Post" here , bigger than any of my posts ever !!! The first thing you should do is try a 8 inch or 10 inch open face "Bounty Hunter" Search coil , Just make sure the 4 or 5 connector pins are the same , check your tx and rx continuity so they are not crossed . The 7 or 7.25 inch is Bounty Hunters Cheapest Coil , I would not mess with it !!!!!!!!!! Test with a 8 or 10 inch then work on your Transmit circuit Modifications. The famous trail detectors are more expensive than Bounty Hunter !!!! I guess they have to be copied over in China and then shipped back over here again !!!! Please look for the "VLF-SHADOW" detector schematic I posted and compare the Schematics , use the shadows TX circuit , or the russian mods . It sounds like your tx transistor is being overdriven , or you have drifted off frequency , check if that detector is 13 or 15 khz ????..I cant remember ???..............Your Detector will work very Good after the Modifications are correct..................Take Care..................Bye............Eugene
