If the soil is granulated into chunks, each chunk will have its own tau, which is considerably shorter, and thus behaves as material with considerably lower conductivity.

You can press those chunks together (even more than in primary status), but this help nothing.
After pressing, there is no chunks anymore, as well there is no detecting anymore.
Probably answer is in destroyed soil crystalline structure (formed in time) and not in chunks Tau.

I don't know about corrosion removal, but I believe the result of "charging" the soil is dissociation of otherwise neutral components of soil, making it more conductive. Pulsed DC, as for desulfation, or for alkaline batteries charging was my first thought also.
Of course, I may be completely wrong, but the result fits the bill.

From reading the manual, it sounds like a form of electrolysis is taking place, similar to the idea of lead acid battery desulfation or rust removal using electrolysis. The output appears to be pulsed dc, based on the description and the color coding of the wires.

Does it work? It probably changes the path resistance between the metal rods. It may also remove some corrosion on metal objects in the current path.

I think I cracked it.
Considering soil in vicinity of a target is enriched with ions, and you may imagine it as a blob of soil with somewhat higher conductance. Because of its size it will appear as a large target that would not even trigger through a motion filter, but with a very short decay time. When superimposed over a target response, one would expect heavy masking at 90° as salts would do, but instead a little miracle appears - the phase wobbles towards 180° as a normal relic target would.
This is only a preliminary concept of the ion hypothesis. Feel free to come up with alternative ideas.
See the simulation result... LTx and LRx are obvious, L2 is a soil at 250ns tau, and L3 is a relic at 50us tau. Blue trace is a target alone, and green is target with conductive soil.

This is very interesting hypothesis and gets me thinking now...
I never really payed attention on differences in depths with any kind of PI detector.
All the cases i saw so far were only with I/B detectors.

When you break it, you don't have the bulk down to the skin depth (say 1 metre), but considerably less. Same like with bulk aluminium, and alu-foil which is thinner than the skin depth. Most probably they got nothing from that hole, usual story.

There is a continued crack down on catching the ones who found treasure in such places and smuggle them out of the country. In Romania once you dig a hole and find an artifact is considered an archaeological site.

Last year alone they found in several occasions Dacian Kosons out for auction on Ebay, or bought to auction houses. In 2013 in Folkestone Uk they stopped a romanian and upon search they found upon him 145 Dacian Koson gold coins.

Stories like this pop out really often, that means there is treasure and who finds it runs away to sell it. I even saw coins listed as location USA but east European coins and they are actually shipped from East Europe .

This is another legendary "burning treasure" place called "Devils Gap". People dug and searched that place because has legends of treasure and burning treasure. As you can see they dug really deep...maybe they got something...? course they must have used md"s for the job too...

Quite same story from my grandfather, long ago in the 70"s they were having a drink till late night (normal here after wine is made ) So by 2 am when they went towards back yard they saw flames from the ground. Next day the grandfather started digging a huge hole few meters by few meters but could not find anything.
Now imagine i took this virus so i carry on with metal detecting ...lol
