Getting back on off topic

Well, I didn't know that . Was there an announcement or did it just go poof ? I guess you're not too interested in more forum participation although that would require a certain amount of babysitting ,Originally posted by Qiaozhi View PostThere is no Off Topic forum on Geotech.
Carl removed it a long time ago.
I started a thread over at Friendly forum yesterday. Used my original IP address so wasn't trying to hide. It was basically a thread about the decline in membership postings and how a forum does nothing to gain members or tries to keep them. A forum eventually becomes a reflection of who is in charge.
I noticed Carl commented on my thread and I noticed one person said "" Anyone else noticed the irony in this thread about forums being dead after a troll started it and it's now 3 pages long in a day? "
Of course, I was the " troll " who started it and generally the forum is dead and hard for anybody there to get 3 pages and still going. And , of course people have a hard time staying on topic cause they are too busy kissing up to authority and avoiding the subject. That forum wants more members but they do nothing to attract more members and little to keep them by letting people post within the rules. It's like you have to be a sheep and avoid discussing issues, which is what they are doing now.
I certainly helped them out as far as participation goes , but banned again as I knew i would be , to keep me from keeping the discussion on topic. Same old, same old.

Not interested in babysitting. This forum attracts Republicans and Democrats, Russians and Ukranians, Christians, and Muslims, vegans and meateaters. As long as they are talking about detector circuits they all get along amazingly well. Give them an OT forum and it all goes to hell in a hand basket. I'll gladly do without that forum traffic.
It's funny, I have seen heavy-handed leadership at Findmall and TreasureNet, but Friendly? Nah, they tend to live up to the name. Not to say that if you troll there enough you won't get banned, but it would have to be pretty bad. Same thing here, bans are extremely rare, and only after numerous warnings. The guys are right, though, Facebook has had a severe impact on forums everywhere, fueled by the "Look at me, I'm special" crowd.
Geotech is a specialty forum, been here for 25 years and will continue as long as there is interest in playing with detector circuits. I don't run it as a popularity contest or an ego trip. Take it or leave it.

I spent much time on many threads years ago and yes, the censorship was very prevalent. On the permission threads I was getting so many PMs from Craig I quit reading them. None were in reference to breaking any rules and I never broke a rule there. They were all about him trying to get me to post as he prefers. He could have told those that were getting upset and couldn't control themselves to stay off the thread . This forum does not advertise for discussion on numerous topics . I realize that. Friendly does and has cesured and curtailed discussions and Craig spent a lot of time harrassing people trying to get them to post how he prefers . You should have realized that if you were paying attention.Originally posted by Carl-NC View PostNot interested in babysitting. You probably didn't get into the permission threads and try to use them as advertised. Not to much of a degree if you did.Originally posted by Carl-NC View PostI dunno, maybe I just don't rub people the wrong way. I've never once received an admin PM on Friendly.
I probably received close to a hundred and that should tell you what I've been saying- Caig trying to get me to post as he wanted .

It's really a matter of advertising a product or service without the intent on delivering that . I've seen it many times.
Back when Dankowski had some traffic is a good example . Always advertised as a site for all things metal detecting but the members would do whatever they could to try to keep issues other than a detector from being discussed. There was no moderation/ babysitting to try to keep it as advertised .
Just chaos and people trying to be king of the hill . If someone invited you over to their house for dinner and you were kept from eating dinner or were being harrassed for trying to eat dinner , you wouldn't be much of a host. And Dankowski failed miseably and I wouldn't trust anything he says or does. The data is still there to see why, but an attempt to hide it by changing username makes it a bit harder to locate.

My last on this unless there is an interest.
Most forum members seem to be in a little click and not really interested in doing anything to help other than detector questions. Nothing to try to help the forum grow or maintain members.
Craig at Friendly is only really interested in a small numbe of beach hunters . He couldn't stand it back in the day when the permission threads were taking attention away from his interest. You'll never see him welcome a new member or try to interact with any members other than his chosen few.
There is a lot a person can do . A thread over at Friendly was discussing a video of a family at a park digging holes and the kids playing with the dirt. The forum members were bragging how they would never do that and were making fun of the family. When the thread had numerous responses I commented on the youtube video and furnished a link to the forum thread and politely told the family that wasn't a proper way to do that. They thanked me and said they didn't know and they deleted the video at my suggestion. The forum members weren't going to do anything positive and post outside their little safe harbor.
I once stopped White's from running contest in a public park where they were planting targets and trying to get as many people to go digging them up. How stupid was that. And if I would have had a little more support from the other members at dankowski we could have possibly have gotten White's to recall that MX Sport or at least furnish the serial numbers of the units that were manufactured having the water infiltration issues. I have other instances of things I've done for the hobby and the people in it but won't bore you with those.

I suggest you have a " Non - technical " sub- forum for subjects metal detecting related. I would be like an off-topic forum but metal detecting related only. That would eliminate the worry about subjects you just mentioned.Originally posted by Carl-NC View PostNot interested in babysitting. The hobby needs a better place to discuss things than Tnet or Friendly forum. People need a place to have a little fun and talk about some of the issues that they are not talking about on other forums. Most of the good people left those forums because they became boring and people on there now are not the type that will do anything outside the box but within rules.
It's about as boring there as it is here to people that aren't building detectors. Time for you to do something for the hobby and not just the hobbyist.

There is already a forum here called General Detectors. However, I'm not interested in hosting general metal detecting forums, lots of other people already do that. Geotech is intentionally focused on the circuits and the people who build them. If you find that boring, I suggest you look for another forum.

This place isn't boring when I'm posting, but yeah, pretty well sucks otherwise to me. More boring than Friendly and Tnet which is pretty darn boring. You could find a moderator ( not me ) that I'm sure would be glad to take care of the sub-forum. The people here may want to talk about detecting and not just detectors. Of course, maybe they don't detect . Doesn't seem like they do, but maybe they do.Originally posted by Carl-NC View PostThere is already a forum here called General Detectors.
