I have built both the surf and baracuda detectors, they both work having followed the instructions. However I still don?t really have an understanding about why they work and how. I understand how pulse works but at a component level I am daft. I have also read inside the metal detector but what I really wish to have is an understanding of how it all goes together, and to eventually be able to create my own basic pi with sourced components. Where should I begin? I have tried to learn about opamps ect. Any help on the path I should take to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

If you haven't already seen these two short clips, you might find them to be of help although they aren't speaking to a component level to the degree that perhaps you want.
