Was messing round with some wire I had around and came up with this cute little mickey mouse coil. Was surprised with the depth on such a small coil. Sensitivity is also better on small gold jewelry.

That is well impressive. It seems to be more sensitive than the stock 10" coil.
Have you tried it on the beach yet? -
Yes I have and it works very nicely in trashy areas but way to small for large areas. You have to walk a few inches at a time. don't have that much patience....LOLComment

Did you need to use a preamp in the coil?
I have put a post up asking if someone could make me a large coil (15") for deep beach searching for my Sovereign (will pay for the parts of course)
Due to my eyesight, small soldering is impossible.
Home brew coils have got me well intrigued as a much cheaper alternative than commercial coilsComment

Yes there is a pre-amp or no workie. Just buy a used 15 inch WOT or 15 x 12 sef. The cost of producing a 15 inch coil would far exceed the price of eitherComment

Really? There are a couple of SEF 15" on a certain auction site. They have a couple of days to go and are already up to 80GBP.
Does it really cost that much?
I have built a couple of PI coils in the past and the main cost was the wire, even then it cost no more than a few UK poundsComment

If you build it yourself fine, time is of no concern. You can save some money, but if you want someone else to make it then be ready to pay a premium. Most after market coils are 200.00 + for something 15 inches or larger. Building coils is a slow process. You just don't slap them together. That's why I suggest buying something used if you are looking to save some money. It's your best bet.
