hi, im going to order and make the surf pi 1.2, and ill be using this linked guide, and be making that coil on the link, the cd case and speaker wire coil, can any body tell me if this coil will work well on land as most of my finding, wont be near the sea , maybe streams but mostly just land , thank you

    What guide?

Here is a word in the English language that, if you do not already know the meaning of, you should research:

    AMBIGUITY

edit: Here is another one: VAGUE

If you want an answer to your question, please do not expect someone to dig down through a swath of text to find out the details.

Don't be so hard on the newb, Porky. That guide is perfectly reasonable, you should be well on your way to getting a working detector if you use it. However, inland use of a PI machine means you will dig an excessive quantity of rusty iron, nails etc, it would not be a wise choice for most locations.

hi, thanks for a fair reply, im not sure why some people, like the other guy, choose to waste words against someone on forums with a non usefull post, just to put someone down or have a small stab, if they are going to be typing something, why not just type something use full, its just a show of inner character ,
anyway thanks Skippy, the reason i was going to build this was purely down to budget, so if you get time and you could sugest a cheaper alternative build thread, more suited to land that would be great thanks

For inland use, the TGSL is more suitable and well documented.
          TGSL - Complete Details

and there's a kit available from Silverdog.

Hiya folks. I am also building the siverdog Surf 1.2 PI kit at the moment (for mainly beach use!) and am also a novice builder with only a basic understanding of electronics, being an electrician, rather than an electronics engineer. I am winding a 14" coil for it at the moment out of enamelled 0.43mm copper wire. I wondered if anybody could tell me what an acceptable Ohm reading should be for the coil. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it should be around 1.4 ohms, but am not sure if this is correct. I have currently given it 22 turns as a guess, but this has left me with a reading of 3.6 ohms, which seems a little high. To get around the 1.4 ohms at this rate, I will need only 9 turns, which seems a little lightweight. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Magnette.

Hi Magnette, i never did manage to make a good coil from magnet wire for the reasons you mentioned.
A coil made of speaker wire is much easier to make. Got mine from screwfix,£6 for 50m.

Pi's are not all that sensitive to resistance of the wire. Many people add resistance to limit current
flow in the coil. They are slowed down by capacitance though. To make a "fast" coil you generally
want to use covered (preferably Teflon) wire. Some people use magnet wire but they wind it in a
basket weave to reduce the capacitance. It won't hurt it to use the coil you have but you will miss
some targets due to having to run slower...

Thanks for the advice guys. I was thinking back to my old college days earlier and remebered that if you double the CSA, you reduce the resistance by I think it was a down to a quarter. I then thought about winding two coils at about 29 turns and then running them in parallel tightly bound to give a theoretical resistance of around 1.2 ohms The weight with magnet wire is not really an issue, but would eddy currents or anything perhaps become a problem? Ant advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

                            Hi Prospexican,

I am fairly new to this forum myself. I seem to remeber when I joined that I could not post threads straight away either. To be fair, my postings are jumped off the back of another users posting. I'll have a quick browse and report back mate.

Inside any given forum there is a "Post New Thread" button... click that to start your own thread. I don't know why you keep getting logged out, try clicking the "Remember Me" check box when you log in next time.
