Over or under damping

I read on here somewhere about that its better to slightly over damped or under damped on the critical damping for a PI and I don’t remember which and can’t seam to be able to find it. Can anybody answer please, thanks.

Slight underdamping can increase the sensitivity somewhat, but it can also result in instability.

Look at the drawing you posted again. There is clear answer (under-damped pulse oscillation)

If you monitor the preamp output with an oscilloscope, and adjust the damping with the damping resistor tool, you can see the problem.
