  • White's MX Sport

I'm thinking of buying a DD coil described as 'Detech 13" coil for Whites Mx Sport'.

Does anyone know if the White's MX Sport detector incorporates any electronics in the coil assembly, or does it use just a simple DD coil?

    Thanks

    No electronics in the coil.

OK I got my new MX Sport coil. It has an 8 pin connector - 7 pins around the edge and 1 in the centre. Does anyone have a wiring diagram? Pins 1 & 7 are connected, 50.6 Ω (Rx?) and pins 2 & 3 are connected, 2.0 Ω (Tx?). I haven't got round to measuring the inductances yet. I would guess that the centre pin 8 is connected to the shield - is there any way to determine this? That leaves three 'spare' pins.

          This is my recollection:

          Pin1 -- RX- (shield)
          Pin7 -- RX+
          Pin2 -- TX-
          Pin3 -- TX+

The other pins are not used. The MX Sport was in very early development when I left but I selected the M12 8-pin connector as the new standard. The other 4 pins were for power (+/-) and serial data (clk, data). The intent was to include the preamp, micro, and accelerometer in the coil. That didn't happen.

What ground filter is used in the MX sport? In the 6000di pro sl it is very high, which means you have to sweep the coil quickly. In other detectors you can adjust the filter. How is it in the MX sport because I do not see any decrease in range or only a small one depending on the sweep speed. Or maybe a wide filter was used. What would the accelerometer in the probe be used for? Is it for the detector to know what speed you are swinging at?

I would like to thank Carl for his work with White's company. As well as his contribution to metal detector engineering and the creation of this Geotech1 forum. Thank you Carl.

All of the 6000 series up to the XL-Pro were 4-filter designs, which require fast sweeping to minimize 4th derivative signal loss. The MXT/MX Sport were 2-filter designs and could tolerate much slower sweep speeds. The accelerometer can be used for a lot of things, see patent US9207315.

Was the MX Sport supposed to have stereo audio? Is it designed for it? Can it be upgraded somehow? This question is probably mainly for Carl.

The MX Sport was released after I left, but I don't recall that stereo audio was ever considered. The audio is generated by the micro, so you cannot upgrade it to stereo.

Do you know if there is a resonating capacitor embedded in the coil housing? Or is the cap in the electronics box?

Almost certainly in the main circuit as it was for the MXT.

Thanks Carl. Do you know what the difference is between V-rated coils (ie for the V3 and V3i machines) and eg this coil for the MX Sport? I know the V3 machines are multi-frequency but what is it that makes their coils "V-rated"?

There is an extra nulling process to make them work at 22.5kHz for the V.
