  • Pulse Star II Pro – Help Identifying 5-Pin Connector Functions on Main PCB

    Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on reverse-engineering or repairing a Pulse Star II Pro professional metal detector. I need your help identifying the exact function of each pin on the 5-pin connector located on the main circuit board, near the battery input and coil interface (see attached photo).

Here's what I know so far:
    • The device is powered by a 12V lead-acid battery (Panasonic LC-R121R3PG).
    • The 5-pin connector appears to be part of the coil driver or power distribution.
    • Pins 4 and 5 on the connector have wide and isolated PCB traces, suggesting that they carry high current or are related to power or pulse emission.

    I have already measured:
    • Pin 1 to Pin 2 gives +10.4V DC when powered.
    • I'm not sure which pin is ground (GND), VCC, signal, or coil-related.
    • This connector is not the standard 3-pin GX12 coil plug, but an internal 5-pin header on the PCB.

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation of the 5-pin connector. That really helps!

        Now I have a follow-up question:

I have a 1m × 1m coil from a Pulse AR III metal detector, which uses a 3-pin connector. I would like to know if it's possible to connect this coil to the Pulse Star II Pro, and if so, how should I wire it? Some details:
        • The Pulse AR III coil uses a 3-pin GX12-style connector (just like the Pulse Star II Pro).
        • I already read in the official Pulse Star II Pro documentation that Pins 1 and 3 should be bridged for large coils (1m or 2m loops like PS02/PS04).
        • I assume that the Pulse AR III coil is similar in function and structure.
        My questions:
        1. Can I safely use the Pulse AR III coil (1m × 1m) with the Pulse Star II Pro?
        2. If yes, should I connect Pins 1 and 3 together on the connector?
        3. Are the wiring and coil characteristics compatible between these two models?

Any experience or wiring diagrams would be greatly appreciated!

        Thanks in advance!
