  • Repairability of Nel Coils.

I'm taking apart a NEL STORM DD COIL 14" x 13" for a MINELAB Sovereign.
I am going in through the bottom to find a faulty wire connection but I have a feeling that Nel use a black resin.
I've hacksawed what should the outer shell layer but it smells like resin, there does not appear to be an outer shell and its black.

    Am I right?

Well it is a type of black resin, but only the bottom protective layer, said to be used in marine applications.
To open this coil up you have to go in from the top and pry off the bottom, but be carfully as this black layer can be extremely sharp.
The board is cramped, not well layed out like the Torando coil. After the hard stuff is scrapped away Flux cleaner does a good job of softening the glue covering the board.

Does anybody know anything about the larger bare wire in image 2? It connects infront of the pink wire.
If you look on the 5th image of the Tornado coil left side of the board second joint up the wire is mini compared to the NEL board.

If you look in the lower right corner of the first image you can see where the TX wire had a bad solder joint.
I could finish this repair but I'm going to use this board on a larger coil.

Bare wire in image 2, a drain wire? large enough to tow a small car, anyone care to explain what is going on here.

No idea, you certainly don't need the drain wire to be that heavy. I prefer 30 AWG.
