  • Minelab FBS 10" Coil Repair

Got an old FBS factory coil given to me that has had the cord pulled out of it . Was thinking I would try to repair it but not sure as I never tried any coil work before . I managed to get it apart without too much trouble did a little cutout of the connection area so I could see the wire attacments . I only see one thicker braided type wire at the top and a very thin copper single strand wire at the bottom that is basically laying on the bottom of the housing undisturbed . I see no break in it . The only wire that appears to be broken is the multistrand wire at the top . Can anyone tell me what I'm looking at here ? I assumed there would be both a tx and rx wires ? I don't have the coil cable to go by . Click image for larger version

at first wait a small board. do all accurately -! another way you will break it and noway to do new.
be ready. you have to draw all connections to the board.

Alright had no idea we were dealing with a board . Looks like a 6 wire hookup ? I would have to source a cable somewhere and open shell to gain access . Hmmm looks like it may be more trouble than its worth by the time I buy a new cable . Thank you KT315 for the insight .

4 wire. 2 for RX, 2 for TX. No outer shield layer.

Ok got in a little deeper this morning and have uncovered more wires . I have them marked with white dots . I was expecting to find four of the heavier twisted wires but only found three . The fourth wire is just a tiny single strand . Am I missing something ? Which are TX and which are RX . There is no board I have found yet but these are the wires that were torn loose . The information in post #2 is for a Minelab Sovereign coil which has a amplifier board inside. Your coil looks like its for a Explorer/Etrac/Quatro/Safari, no internal board. The single thin wires are for the receiver and the thick twisted wires are for the transmitter. On a 5pin mic connector Tx pin1,2 and Rx pin3,4 pin5 not connected. The original cable is dual coax.

I may be overlooking something but I only see one thin wire and three thicker multistrand wires as shown in the pic . There is a red looking twisted wire and two others that have solder on them . It doesn't add up ?

I think the red twisted is the cable shield that broke off. Each coil has two connections which you will have to dig out. The mess of thin wires is the tuning loop.

So there will be four connections total or two ? I only see three at the moment , that is the shielding wire (reddish) and the other two with solder on the ends .

i think you broke thin naked wires to the enclosure, the shield connections, they go in graphite layer at both sides. seek sure the plastic you deleted.

Yeah I cut one bare wire that laid on the outside of the case to easier access the innards . Will be easy enough to splice it back .
