  • Cinch rca as new DD coil connector standard!

What do you think about this idea?

It is really not good that every detector has it's own uncompatible coil-connector.

Shure, there exists coils with incompatible special wiring or circuits.

But at least most DD coil-cables consists of 2 small shielded coax-cables only,
for connecting (representing) left and right windings.

So it's the best and easiest solution to make such coils compatible with all
DD compatible detectors to use cinch connectors.

The male ones soldered at the cable and the females at the detection unit.

btw. those connectors also fit tight and are almost waterproof, while shielding
    perfectly the coils signals.

This is just my suggestion, but think about it: wouldn't it be of great
advance if alot coils could be used with alot detectors instead of this
stupid "every coil has it's own connectors"!

Simple everyone start to support this idea and sometimes we have this new standard!

And now I will cut some coil-cables and attach cinch connectors!

Not bad idea, I succesfully used cinch on some DIY MD in past.

The only problem with factory MD can be that all MD are not the same in this can lead to connecting wrong coil and possible failure of MD.

my new favourit from tgsl is a microphone cable with din 5 pole standard plug enough channels, easy to buy, easy to solder
      http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN-Stecker

thought about cinch but standard cables inside are mostly with thin wire

WM6, very good, seems you'll have/had at least some identical view of things like me.
You're right with compatibility-issues, of course only coils within a certain range
(impedance and with same or without internal capacitors) should be used.

The thin and easy breakable wire really is a problem, thats why only the cinch jacks
should be used and for the cable rg-58 coax should be used or thinner stuff if the
sensitivity is affected (too much movable amount of metal very close to coil).

Some DD coils only use one shielded mini-coax. It may be important:
Is this one more often used for TX or RX circuit, magnetical-antenna?

There is no compatibility of coils amongst manufacturers, so using a common connector won't make any difference. This would be like trying to get all car manufacturers to adopt a common lug bolt pattern, so the wheels on your Mini-Cooper will also fit your Dodge Ram pick-up.

            Hi Carl,
            thx for your answer.

You're right, there are too many different detectors with different circuits and
stuff out there, and the train for such standard leaved a long time ago.

However my tests yesterday and today have shown that indeed different coils
            are interchangable:

The 10'' Fisher 1266x coil works also with the Blisstool LTC64 that uses
a DD coil. And the Garrett Ace 250 works with both of these coils.

            The problem is:
The discrimination either is shifted or doesn't work at all, but it works as a
backup if some coil is broken in all-metal mode.
The disc could be fixed by some capacitors but is it worth the whole work?

Yes, if you wanna use a special large or small coil with a detector that doesn't
have any different sizes where you could choose from.

No, if the connection- and impedance values are too far away from compatibility.

btw. the cinch wouldn't be all for such standard - also
shielding should match and the RX / TX must be color coded.
