Maybe a 1x1 coil to work good if you walk a little quickly. Check my post about TDI 1x1 coil.

Theoretical analyzis and practical measurement showed that an almost orthogonal coil configuration (adjusted in induction balance) operates much better than a square monocoil with equal overal dimension and equal distance from ground. The advantages of "almost orthogonal" are:
- minized AIR signal,
- reduced GND signal,
- preamp can operate with more gain (increased sensitivity even to small targets),
- convenient transportation,
- ability to swing (whisk) at scanning and
- less weight.
The disadvantages are:
- difficult to build and
- needs adjustment of induction balance in the field, but they pay off. Most deep seeking machines use orthogonal coil configuration (incorrect named TWO BOX).Attached Files

Mikebg, you say that almost orthogonal scheme can work in a traditional PI machine?
The induction balance settings in the field would be:
Variarar the angle of the coil TX.
Measure the signal after the previous, to adjust the balance of induction?
Is that correct?
Thanks, Jose

Could you not simply lock the coils in position at the factory?
