  • Using Variable-Speed Device on Recycled Computer Cooling Fan for DIY Solder-Fume Extractor.

    I'm thinking of making a DIY fume-extractor for soldering electronic components to the circuit board. I like the idea of being able to vary the fan speed. This would allow me to set the speed for best draw of fumes into the carbon-activated filter chamber.

    What electrical considerations do I need to know to properly match a speed-control device and a small fan ?

    If you need more information in order to answer my question, ask away and I'll be glad to supply more detail.

      I might be stumped, too. Is it an AC or DC fan? They are controlled in entirely different ways.

        ToddB66, I have used this type of device a few times to control the speed of a 12v DC computer fan... they work well and control the fan speed with no hunting of the motor...



        For AU$3.20 I feel it is not worth stuffing around to build something.

          I'm thinking of using an AC to DC 12 Volt output Adapter, to power a recycled DC computer cooling fan.

            A PWM controller like G-set suggested is probably what you want.

                I went to the e-Bay address hyperlinked in G-set's post #5, but there is a note that indicates the item is not posted to the U.S.

                So I was able to find a similar PWM speed control at Amazon.com and ordered that one. See the attached photo and ad below.

                      Thanks for the links to the Altoids candy-tin fume extractor.

                      I've seen that before and decided to build something larger with a carbon filter and variable-speed device purchased on Amazon (Estone Hi-Q Pulse Width PWM DC Motor Speed Regulator Controller Switch 6V 12V 24V 3A, sold by heroneo, new condition). When purchased it was $4.69 with Free S&H. I'm waiting for it to arrive this month and I've attached a photo below. BTW, noticed I made an error in my previous post #9, Dec. 25, 2014, when typing the max-end of the Voltage range as being 28V; this should have been 24V.
