No it is not normal. First at all try it outdoor. It can be some disturbances inside house.
Also check RC filter at sensors and 5V line.

Kyrgiz: yes it can be used as gradiometer. Also arduano program work like gradiometer.

Payem20: Yes program is for free "TreasureHunter3D", but you need to buy detector. Last program is also much better. It use camera for scanning. It is really fun to use this detector https://youtu.be/FWKaieeSY5M
