  • Can i make this more powerful.

    Hi all.

Im Del from Bulgaria,i moved here two years ago from the UK.

    I have a toy/child's metal detector...... http://www.ferrit.co.nz/WebRoot/ExtI...or1_Jayz_l.jpg

and i was wondering if at all possible, make this a tad more powerful,iv had ago my self but no joy.
what i did was replace the coils with my own made effort.

I can put my hands to most things and am keen to have ago but don't have the knowledge in this field.

If i can get this to pick up at a foot depth id be happy but i also understand that this toy is a toy and has no chance off upgrade if you like.

But one can only ask or one will never know.

    Thank you in advance Del.

      Hi Del,

I agree, if you don't ask you will never find out. In this case I think the answer is a very resounding no. It would not be worth the effort.

Far better to build one of the many projects on this website. Don't worry if you get stuck, we'll help you all we can, including actually doing the build for you in some cases, time and beer funding allowing.

I think a foot would bbe optimistic for most detectors, but it depends on what you expect to find at a foot depth

        Thank you Sean.

From the list of projects do recommend for a good depth and easy to follow instructions?

Well i did think that a foot depth was not that all deep but come to think of it,once dug you'd have a big hole.

Id buy one but for now with the credit crunch hanging above one's head ill have to make do with what i have and salvage some parts, if any and try a project.

But if one pops up for sale that's cheep enough im sure the misses wont mind.

        Any way cheers mate.

PS did try and register but my email was banned, must be a hotmail thing, never mind.

I would look at the Bandido, or pehaps the Golden Sabre Lite. I'm hoping to build one of these as soon as I can. I reckon that it's possible to build one for under £30 (Nice profit margins the dealers have then eh?)

I'll have look around the forum for you later today and see if I can find something nice, simple and cheap I can recommend for you.

I have some excellent Fisher copies (Chinese origin) that I sell, I have one or two with bad scratches and broken bits that I don't have time to repair. If you dont mind a kit of bits and paying the shipping I can see if I can dig one out of the shed sometime this month for you. I think they work OK, the damage is just cosmetic.

Happy to help a fellow Geotech member though.

            Unregistered Is now Del.

Thanks Sean, yer sounds great just let me know when..

I had a play about with the toy and i discovered that if put a CD in the middle of the coils i got a better signal? so i ended up putting a small coil of wire in its place and got the same effect, its not attached to any thing just glued in place....all good fun anyway.

            Cheers Del.

              Good, and WELCOME to Geotech!!

See, at heart you're really one of us, a fellow experimenter.

What you have done I suspect is balanced the coil properly now, the extra inductive load on the system has pulled the coil into proper alignment (and YES people you can have an unconnected coil do the balancing for you ;-) ). experiment with larger coils (more turns) until you get it just perfect.

You might be quite surprised to learn that the metal detector IS the COIL!!! the box at the top just goes beep, therefore, and having ben proven on the iforum in other threads, the better the balance of the coils (usually rubbish on cheap machines like this one - no insult intended) the better the machine will perform.

Keep at it or "Seek and ye shall find"
