use laptop computer to enhance metal detector function

Thinking about using one of the new small(9") laptop computers to enhance the function of tosoro metal detector.Was wondering if anyone has experience modifying a detector in this way. I have heard that the addition of a computer will allow the "spreading of target response" to create distance between the different metals(separate pull tabs from gold rings etc.) I am told there is a minute difference between aluminum and gold and that today's computers should be powerful enough to detect , amplify and display this difference in signals.

If anyone has had experience in this area or would be interested in working on a project like this please let me know.
