Nice schematic. I think power consumption is less than 100 mA so you can use smaller size (transistor looking) voltage regulator like 78L05.

Also CD4024 can drive some low load itself so you can use small buzzer with capacitor or LED with resistor to make cheaper simpler version of that pinpointer without second transistor.

    NUPI thank you, excellent documented!

I drew the PCB of the pinpointer compact design with non-SMD parts.
Plate size is 40x40mm. If you like the design you can use it in your kit for sale.
The upper 3 pads is for coil, middle 2 pads is for supply, lower 2 pads is for motor.

I wonder if you could do some testing with the usual materials, to compare data:
Aluminum foil of chocolate: 3x3mm, 2x2mm and 1x1mm
    Copper wire 0.4mm diameter: 3mm, 2mm and 1mm
I do not have a gold chain ...

    Important - Important

I made two mistakes in the schematics.

One in the schematic (schematic NUPI 3) misses D2

In schematic (pinpointer NUPI 2014.jpg) I made a major mistake. There, the wires 1 and 2a
    on the coil is swapped.

Inductance values are very close to TX and RX of some VLF coils.

Can somebody to connect VLF coil to this schematic?

It may show some interesting results!

    Great Bente,
    I see two small mistakes.
I think you need BD139 and D1 turn 180 degrees.

Is it possible that you make one with a normal components, no smd?

For clarity, I have not made with SMD.
So, I do not know how the circuit will do with SMD components.

    It looks nice.
I go first practice a time with it. Thanks.

Since I have learned how shape of magnetic field strongly depends on shape of coil.

If you really want it go deep so make coil as flat as you can and as bigger diameter as situation permits.

So I am voting for "disk" shape of core and a "ferrite ring" as a variation of disk shape. (You can have an air inside of a disk keeping similar parameters of magnetic field on some distance.)

Probably ferrite cap can behave as a disk too if windings are made outside cap but not inside cap.

Variants of "transformer" shape of coils like "T", "U", "cap" will reduce range drastically because all magnetic field will be concentrated in small area instead of spreading far away to the targets.

Who do not believe in my theory welcomed to check it in practice.
    I agree
But with ferrite ring? I do not know.

    It's not fritzin.
The images are of a program that I once
    found on Internet.
    I use them in photoshop.

Create a pinpointer that meets your requirements, I can not make it.

    Hi Bente,
That would be great if you would do that.
Yesterday I made a drawing of the pointer.
I is, like I made it.
With this layout, he does well.

Maybe you can use it Click image for larger version
