When you are working with a high gain of the preamplifier and a small swing of the output voltage (say 6-8 Volts), this is the only way to be able to make an earlier sample in time. This is the time when the clamp diodes have stopped conducting, but the voltage from the coil is still high enough and keeps the amplifier saturated. Introducing a target changes exactly these "spikes", along with the "normal" part of the decay characteristic (depending, of course, on the time constant of the object) and because your sample averages them - you get the expected result.

    That's what I think, but I don't know if I'm right.

    • An other, more simple way to make more early sampling, is to reduce the gain of the first amplifier and to increase the gain of the next stages.
