  • Any Mod's for Dual Field PI's Chatty Threshold?

After swinging VLF's, a TR & a BFO for the last 56 years, I finally got my first PI, a White’s Dual Field.

I’ve seen a lot of posts/comments on other forums from guys saying that the DF's threshold is chatty, some even described its sound as a bit like static. But seems everyone has said that the TDI Beach Hunter's threshold is smooth, and the Surf PI & PI Pro's thresholds were smooth.

So, I’m wondering why the Dual Field’s threshold would be chatty when the PI’s that came before and after the DF seem to have smooth thresholds, according to posts I’ve seen on various forums.

Does anyone know why the DF would have a chatty threshold when the others didn’t? And would there happen to be a mod for the DF that would reduce or smooth out the chatty threshold?

PI's are sensitive to electrical noise. You should first test the unit far away from cell phones, buildings and power lines. This will verify weather its interference or some kind of component problem. You can reduce the interference problem by adjusting the transmit frequency. The TDI's have this adjustment. But on a water detector it can be a complex mod.

DF should be no more chatty than a non-DF, unless White's tweaked up the gain on the DF.

Thanks Carl, good to know. I haven't heard my specific DF yet; I only have the control box & coil. Need to get new headphones, shaft & external battery pod, as this DF was modded by OBN to allow external batteries and choice of headphones.

I've only been able to hear DF audio via YouTube videos and based on comments I've seen on various forums. Didn't sound bad to my ears, then again, I'm an old school rock & roll guitar player, so it would take a lot to irritate my ears.

Thanks Altra. I guess I can try adjusting Pulse Timing & Gain combinations to see if that would smooth out the threshold if it turns out to be "chatty", but I don't think it's gonna be an issue for my ears.

Just wasn't sure if there might be a mod that others have done to smooth out the threshold, so I'll have to see how my DF sounds once I get it set up and ready to hunt.
