  • Unknown old Underwater PI Detector Model

There's always something new to discover…

I recently found this old underwater PI detector. I've already searched various Facebook groups for metal detectors, but apparently no one knows anything about it. The detector has a very professionally made housing and circuit board. It's definitely not an Eric Foster AquaPulse model, nor a later AquaScan model, and not an early version of this detector either. A Whites PI1000-3000 series detector can also be ruled out. The electronics are completely different. They are similar to those of the Baracuda detector, but only partially. There are also no markings on the detector. The only clue is the word "ALTRA" on the circuit board. Based on the construction of the electronics and the design of the circuit board, the detector probably dates from the late 1980s or early 1990s. Does anyone recognize this detector?

In the late 80's early 90's I was building custom pi detectors for the shipwreck divers here in Florida. If you post a photo of the pcb, I can probably give you more info.

      Hello Altra,
this is the circuit board for the underwater PI detector. The board needs to be repaired. Perhaps you manufactured this detector yourself? At least your name "ALTRA" is printed on the board. It is a single-sided board.

        Hi Altra,

By the way… the detector was purchased in Florida. The PCB is quite corroded and some components are already partially rotten. This is the PCB side with your name "ALTRA" on it.

Here is some info. It look likes a Barracuda because Anchor Electronics paid me for the design and I updated it with self adjusting threshold. When diving SAT can be a problem with rocks and other obstacles, so no motion tuning is preferred. The Barracuda was sold for wading and beach hunting, so it needed SAT tuning. Schematic in zip
