Somebody sent me this schematic and I decided to sent it on to you guys . I bought a book lately and this schematic looks a lot like a schematic that was in that book . I have to check that when I have time . In my opinion this schematic is the same as the DBP2010. Let me know if you think so too . Kees

Yes,

this is the DBP 2010 from the Elektor Book.
Be careful if you intent to build this project! In the Layout are some (wanted) errors because the reader should not build this MD (on it's own). He or she should buy the Detector Kit from the book author Rolf Wilhelm (price over 1000 Euro). The author is not very cooperative at all. I tried to contact him a few times but no responds at all! Similar I heard from some other guys. The same no respons at all. At the Elektor web page is an error list but not everything is listed. I don't have any further info on it. Maybe someone who built the project successful can place a complete error list.

Chris . I have built the DBP2010 with good success . It took quite a bit of corresponding with the editor of the book and some POWER talk from my side . I have two finished right now and they are good detectors . Maybe if anybody is interested I could help them with building this unit ( which with the right guides is not bad at all ) The coils sre not critical and I even have made a probe for this unit consisting out of a ferrite rod ( from a ferrite antenna ) and put a length of 0.5 mm wire over it for about 12cm . Works perfrctly for narrow spaces . Lets see if there are any of you wanting to build this unit . As you said , don't expect any help from the writer of this article ( for the reasons you mentiond ) . Very unfriendly man if you ask me . Kees

How does the discriminator (Filter 1 & 2) works? Can you distinction good between ferro and non ferro (Gold, Copper etc..) objects? And can you post or send me a list of changes you made to the unit? I want to update the changes in my book. I know that there are some guys out there who gave up on this unit because of errors and no help from the author. They might be interested as well.
I haven't started jet to build the DBP2010. But I'll do it at a later date. Now I have another project on the work bench that I want to finish first.

Chris . It is the same schematic as the DBP2010 . In that case C7=220n . The 2N4124 ia a NPN transistor and not PNP as in the drawing . Reverse the arrow in the schematic . Ground is pin 10 Tuning is pin 11 . Resistor R34 is important . To check this transistor replace temperarely with pot-meter . Filter 1 and 2 seem to work properly . For the reat build the unit according to the component drawing with values as in the parts list . Connections K1 trough K12 should be made by multiple strand wire . The module can be placed anyplace you want . The coils are 230mm diam . 43 windings with 0.5 mm wire and 450mm diam. 23 windings with 0.5 mm wire . Then you still have the large coil (2 meter ) and the probe as I described . The wiring of the components on the board takes some figuering but with some thoughts it is do-able .In general I would say that it is one of the best PI metal detectors I came across so far . Penetration absolutely great . Kees

The wrong R38 is the listed together with R8. [original German text: Seite 161: In der Stückliste ist R38 zweimal aufgeführt. Richtig ist die Zeile: R36, R38 = 1 Ohm.
Falsch ist, dass der Widerstand auch bei R8 mit aufgeführt ist.]

Have you changed this in your working unit as well?

In the book are so many stupid errors... unbelievable. I think the author wanted to give information in his book but not to much. And at the end someone (should) buy his (expensive) unit.
The circuit description he gave is a horror. The hole circuit description is squeezed on a half A5 page. My grandmother (with no electronic knowledge) can explain it better....

I smell a rat

I know this design. It was manufactured in 1980s and 1990s as a SNIFFER by a Irish (?) company linked somehow to Eric Foster (correct me if I'm wrong, Eric).

It was also sell in Germany under EURODEC brand.

Technology theft? Maybe, but I am not sure of all those linkages.

Similar design diagrams are available in the net as a XR-71 (used to be manufactured by the same company).

There is a French listgroup dedicated to this and other PI designs, with some knowleagdeable people who do not mind share their experiences.

Chris . Going by the schematic I posted there are not many mistakes when you use the component drawing with the component list . Forget all the rest .Your remarks that the whole set-up smells like a rat is correctly done . The author never intended for us to build this detector . In his whole approach he tells us time after time to buy his kit with the correct information . The descriptions are also geared to buying his kit . The description of his large coil are verry sumere and incomplete. Besides the drawing of the large coil are completely wrong . With some doctoring you will get the right idea but going by the book will let you make mistake after mistake . As I said , plainly going by the two drawings ( as mentioned above ) will make it possible to come to a good endresult . I have complained to the editor and the publisher of the book and have gotten some cooperation from them . I have warned them NOT to sell anymore books with the mistakes still in place . It is not enough to say that eventual mistakes cannot be held against them because I informed them of such mistakes and they could not claim ignorance in the matter any loger . I do not know if there is a complete list of errors now . I have built ( as I said ) two units and both are working great . Kees

Dave . The book is only published in France Germany and Holland . Don't feel sorry about that though because it is worthless .There is as much info in my message above as in the book . The book is only written so the people will by the Kit from the author . Kees

Hello,
I'm french and i bought this book six mouth ago.
As C.Pruysers says There is only some incomplet interresting information. ( like the shape of the signal from different metal but with no information about the size of the part of metal and distance from the coil ????).
The only mistake that i know is : there is a strap betwen the two point just beside P1 and P2 that is not drawing on the implatation drawing.
If you want any other information ask me.
I don't assemble this detector so the only information could be about the book.

Many thanks to you for the info concerning the book,it will be of no use to me as i cannot speak french or german,do you think it is worth building this detector,is there any discrimination against iron,is the diagram posted on this site without mistakes.

Dave . As I said , if you go by the values given in the parts list and place them like in the component schematic , there is nothing wrong with this detector . Give yourself some time to study the material I gave on the top of this message . Remember that some transistors are drawn wrong but that does not change the Base - Emitter - Collector . Be aware that if you use different transistors the configuration B-C-E changes on some of them . Buid this one if you have some experience . If you have no experience leave it alone . Kees

Hi Piotr,

I had certainly had an Irish company called Location Technology and used to supply a German outlet who sold them under the Sniffer XR... banner. However, another manufacturer came on the scene with detectors called Pimdec, Superdec and Eurodec. I have schematics for the Pimdec and Superdec but not the Eurodec. The circuit arrangement is rather strange and, IMHO, overly complicated for the performance obtained. I have a Eurodec pcb somewhere and it will be interesting to compare it with the layout Chris posted. It certainly has a potted module and a bipolar transistor for the TX. Always wondered what was inside the module Around 1990, the Eurodec was redesigned using more conventional circuitry by Pulse Technology, and was sold up till about 4 years ago. Pulse Technology were bought by Eriez Magnetics and portable detectors were dropped from their product range.
