I couldn't find 30 swg wire at the particular electronics store I went to so I got the next closest thing, 26 awg. My calliper measures the diameter at 0.42mm, should I reduce the number of turns in the coils to compensate for the slightly thicker wire or does it really not matter as long as the coils are similar?

Try to 0.42 mm. Maintain 2 * 50 winding turns.Originally posted by nabiul View PostI couldn't find 30 swg wire at the particular electronics store I went to so I got the next closest thing, 26 awg. Does any one actually have the modified CCO (the one without the radio) built and working?
I did a preliminary test using around 10.5 volts with the coils and earpiece loosely attached to leads from the circuit and all I got was a barely audible hiss at times and some times nothing.
I still have to permanently attach everything, clean the flux and bring the pot down to 200k from 250k, but I should be hearing something at this point right?

Which schematic do you use? I am building one according schematic posted by maikl here in post #12 and it is working. But you cannot expect from such schematic to go deep in soil (for coins mabe 7 cm in soil max).Originally posted by nabiul View PostDoes any one actually have the modified CCO (the one without the radio) built and working?

I have made CCO metal detector is the same as in your first post.Works great (good sensitivity),coin from 25mm to detect the distance of 160mm (clear shift in tone at 160mm in a crystal earpiece).IC1 and IC2 I put the new.Other parts and wires were taken out from the old unit(old TV,old radio...).But all the parts are identical as the schematic.Pay attention to the "Crystal Earpiece"(their impedance is 200K-300K).You're certainly putting ordinary headphones from 32 ohms.BB metal detector I was not working (but it is certainly better than the best BFO).The CCO is extremely easy for beginners to do it.If you can not like this simple device to do something more complicated you will not surely (give a master to you to make).Originally posted by nabiul View PostDoes any one actually have the modified CCO (the one without the radio) built and working?

CCO is better than BB: has a better detection and is not that important position of the coil(as part of a millimeter at IB metal detector).I would not want anyone to persuade.Make both and you will see.Anyway it is better to do one of these (CCO or BB) than the best BFO.Which is quite complex (there are a lot of parts) for beginners.Originally posted by WM6 View PostYes, sorry. I never tryed CCO, but you cannot expect better results than with BB.

Not according author of both:Originally posted by maikl View Post

CCO:
"With this circuit, I obtained a one-tone shift in an AM radio speaker at 15 cm (6 inches) with a 27mm (1 inch) diameter coin."
BB:
"If well adjusted, it will pick up an old English penny at 150mm (6”)"
The same depth in air. I suppose that author has build both not only one as you.
Generaly speaking it is hard to get something from nothing. And one chip detectors are pretty nothing (even 12V supply was used). With mine BB I can easily detect 30mm silver coin at 15cm in air but in soil (in my testing plant) it is hard detectable deeper than 7-8cm.
