      This will give you a working coil.

      A reasonable depth and sensitivity can be obtained with a 23cm diameter coil, 20 turns made with 0.5mm (24 gauge) standard copper enamel coated wire.

      Yes, it's better to shield the coil.

        Sorry, daft newbie question,, is that shield as in plastic tubing, or shield as in Faraday??? I was led to understand the Surf basic wound coil was pretty immune to sea/saltwater/ground effects???

        (Sorry if this is basic info request, but I am a thick newbie!!! Ta)

          Yes under salt water things can be cool.

          On the beach it is subject to EMI just like any other coil.

          Shield is a cheap and good thing.

          Faraday type it is.

            You will need to shield the coil if you want it to work. If you don't it will give you lots of false signals. Dave Frank

              I dont get the sheild thing.

              On a mono, if u use a true faraday, nothing woould get In or Out



              Does a mono shield have a gap..
