Using Sound Card

We have some doubts about the use of the sound card in the process.
Basicly, the process includes a ultrasonic emision and its reception and processing. But, how can we convert this signal to a metric parameter?. What is the rol of the "sound card" in this step?. Do anybody be able to send us diferent file examples used in the process for seeing the formats?. Is the PIC (or another microcontroler) the responsible of the conversion to a metric parameters?.

yes ofcorse it is the pic microcontroler that can devide the resived sound into parts and store them in the registers and than compare them with the sounds that are installed in it so that it can determine which one belonges to each one
