When I switch on my SSP the battery check bleep stays on and does not die away. Does anybody have any ideas please?

i just had the same problem check the sencitivity pot

Check the Cap in the bat test cct at the top (replace anyhow). They dry out and fail. VERY COMMON. Repairs at an authorised dealer will cost around £50 for this one little 5 minute job!!!!

DIY for a LOT less!!

Also check the output of the 7660 is correct.

I've repaired shedloads of these machines when I ran Pulsar so I think the above is probably the problem.

Sean is probably correct about the 7660. You can let the smoke out of these ICs really easily by accidentally connecting the battery the wrong way round.

Thank you all for your replies. I have just changed the Tantalum cap and all is fine.
The only thing is the two trim pots inside the control box have been turned whilst I was checking them.
Does anybody know how to set them up correctly?

Erm....DUH!!!!!

It's been a loooooooong time!!! Yes it's a tant, probably short or close to. Glad my diagnosis was on the mark though ;-).

OK Here's how to set the pots up.

One will be threshold so that's obvious (it's in the middle or near it) and ONLY affects all metal mode. For the other one, you need an old radio with Long Wave OR a piece of ferrite (the long grey bar in the radio)

Take your machine OUTSIDE and proceed as follows;

1) Turn on and set in ALL METAL

2) Set the machine up on a PLASTIC outdoor table (NO METAL anywhere near it)

3) Adjust the threshold pot for a steady hum in your headphones.

4) Remove ALL jewellery

6) Set the OTHER pot to MID

5) Wave the ferrite across the head (does the sound INCREASE or DECREASE as the ferrite crosses the DEAD CENTRE of the head)?

6) Turn pot SLOWLY one way, repeating the step above (wave at what would be NORMAL sweep speed) If no setting can be found, re-centre the pot

7) Repeat above but this time turn the pot the OTHER way (slowly).

Eventually (one way or the other) you will reach a point where the threshold only increases a VERY SMALL AMOUNT. This is a slight POSITIVE OFFSET and is the best setting for sensitivity to thin silver and gold on the SSP.

Put the machine BACK together and ENJOY!

Yes, Sean's advice is very helpfull.... but always check with a LARGE silver coin..if wrong adjusted you will not detect large silver !!
I have learned that, long ago, the hard way.. buddy was finding large Spanisch coins... yes more then one !!
My d.i.y Silver Sabre dit not detected them, I had a wrong adjusted ground preset !!

ApBerg is right (sorry I missed that bit off) - Thanks ApBerg .

If you look at the schematic, you will see that adjusting the ground balance also affects the discriminate (nice one Tesoro ) and whilst a properly set up machine is a killer on small and thin silver items, get it even a BIT wrong and you will find ZIP!!

BTW your lack of depth could be down to a worngly set threshold (yes this DOES have an effect on the Disc mode too)!!

Thanks for that tip. I will check that it detects various coins before I go out detecting. I'll also check on some gold rings as well.
