I stumbled upon a piece of history.
There was a brilliant fellow Klaus Fuchs that was deeply involved in development of nuclear bombs at a time, but he also published a paper: "The Conductivity of Thin Metal Films According to the Electron Theory of Metals," Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 34, 100 (January 1938 ) that I miss.
His formula was also reproduced in April 1938 issue of Wireless World, which I also don't have.
The formula is supposed to be something like this:



Where:
is the conductivity of the bulk material,
is the mean free path in the bulk
t is the film thickness
p is a specularity parameter

He was a very colourful person, and he is most famous for other activities. It is known that he:
- spied on British for Soviets
- spied on the US for British
- spied on US for Soviets
- was convicted of espionage in Great Britain in 1950
- was given maximum sentence of 14 years

I think "monster coil" have inductance under 2mH, and resistance a little under 1 ohm.

I thought I had posted this yesterday - did anybody see it? Can't find it today so here goes again.

This is the coil and sled made for the High Power Aquapulse. ABS pipe filled with special epoxy so that it is not bouyant. Nylon runners as wear surfaces. Demountable 42in coil. Planing device on cable ahead of the sled (not shown) which drives the cable down when towing so that the sled stays on the bottom.

I for one would be interested in a high powered MD project, for educational purposes. It would be fun.

I would forward engineer it, as I already know how and why it works. A modern version using the latest devices and circuit techniques would be quite straightforward and be at least half the size and weight. You would still struggle with the power supply though; 40 - 50V at 5A. OK on a boat with marine batteries, although you do need a dedicated set to avoid alternator noise.

Hello Eric, you're right, with the techniques and current components, we can greatly improve the circuit, is that I have a passion for the "vintage" and I also believe that the greatest difficulty of a powerfull detector is the power supply and circuits related.

If it were possible, someday, make a reverse engineering of this device would be fantastic. I'm just dreaming a bit.

Seems strange to be resoldering joints that I last made in 1982.

Why was there only one built??.....Sure other treasure hunters would of been after something similar in its day.
You never kept any design schematics?

I got the impression that it was a one off commission, so really if there had been demand for more, Eric would have built them.

I'm sure other treasure hunting groups would have liked one, but Mel Fisher wanted the edge over others and one machine was part of the agreement. I did make a lower power version that ran off 24V and quite a few of those were sold. Ironically I threw out most of the manufacturing information a couple of years ago, thinking it would never be needed again. Luckily I found a few notes and part schematics in a notebook that escaped the purge. Picture of 24V AQ.

This is the only one in the world. It was originally built for a specific purpose - to find silver bars from the Atocha. It has been used for other searches since that time, but I do not have any details.
