i want to try and build a detector that can go under water but i cannot find any water proof potentiometers on ebay or else where in the uk...can normal ones be used in some way to waterproof them..i wonder what sort of controls they use on the whites dual field pulse as this machine can go under water...can anyone pls advise ???

Use the hexseals as mentioned in above post and get yourself some RV6 sealed precision pots. If you ever get an internal control box leak, your posts won't be damaged.
Shafts will be either stainless or nickel chrome plated brass.

I have built a number of waterproof PI's.
The RV6 pots are military grade, sealed from all elements. They are as waterproof as your going to find, o-ring shaft seals, withstands 5 PSI. You need the hex seals to prevent water from getting to where the pot shaft enters the pot threaded collar. Rated IP67. I thread all my holes for the threaded shaft collar, tighter fit than just drilling a hole for mounting. Same goes for my toggle switches.

Cheap is right, they do not have a straight shaft which corrodes in salt water and will not properly seal with a Hexseal. They are not sealed from the outside the pot housing, will quickly fry when saltwater gets into them. And they don't have an o-ring at the bottom of the shaft.
Do it right get the right pots. Especially if your going to invest building a waterproof water hunting detector. Eliminate a bunch of problems right off the bat by not using a cheap common pot.
Yes, they cost a lot more than your common pot but, are worth it.
RV6 pots are small, they fit into smaller boxes if you have space limitations.

i want to try and a build with only about three controls like pulse delay/threshold/sens/ and others inside box to preset...maybe i will get one of those ultra boxes like you used with the mirage as they look good and water tight...what sort of depth does a underwater pulse need to have and coil size ????
