Analysis of satellite imagery covering Egypt between 2002 and 2013 indicates a significant increase in looting and other damage to archaeological sites. Looting escalated dramatically from 2009 with the onset of the global economic crisis, and intensified still further with the Arab Spring in 2011. This was mirrored by an increased volume of Egyptian artefacts sold at auction, suggesting that looting is driven by external demand as well as by internal economic pressures. Satellite analysis can be used to predict the type and period of antiquities entering the market, thereby providing valuable intelligence for international policing of the illicit antiquities trade.

Alaykum Salam, dear friend!
I think I have found now a big "contact-treasure" for you!
There was or still is "Alex Metal Detectors" at Alexandria:
If it meanwhile has moved to Istanbul, it should be still no problem for you
to find out some contact-persons who are located at your home-town.
Check out this website and contact them:
If the import-export connections are good they
will easily import you a detector from Turkey.
But I must warn you:
They also sell so called LRL-detectors (Long Range Locators) !
They show an "amazing" treasure hunt video on their homepage
which suggests that this shown LRL pistol detector has found the tomb.
But I'm shure this never has happened! It' just a promotion-trick!
We even have here some special LRL-forum (the largest in the world! )
so we can assure you, that those LRL-"dream"-devices do not proven work!
They are merely something like pseudo-electronical dowsing-rods.
The best will be that you just ignore those LRL locators and talk about
usual metal-detectors with them so everything will be fine for you.
Don't start to discuss with them about LRLs, it might be totally useless.
Just ask if they can help you to get an usual metal detector to Alexandria for you.
One of their distributors is located in Lebanon:
And ask for contact persons who lived in Alexandria or who managed alexdetectors
3 years ago. They even might still own some detectors, directly available for you.
But I even found a second option for you:
There exists some special electronic- and telecommunication-companies at Cairo
which might help you.
Your special bucket is a great idea!
So you can see what is on the bottom, this can be very helpful!
Good luck and a good time, here is a funny joke cartoon:
Still edible fruit cake - best quality since 5000 years!

Absolutly good idea!
Hammerhead even can comb deep through the sand-dunes with some rake or selfbuilt grill, made of spring-steel.
@ Hammerhead:
Everything OK, nice you asked.
Thanks for the pictures. Too bad if you can't find out why those circuit-boards not functioning.
Your soldering work so far looks pretty good on the pictures.
Of course you can use the parts from those boards to built some working metal detector electronic.
But perhaps it should not be and its better you buy a metal-detector!
I have found out for you the following:
The Lebanon would be not too far from Alexandria! Check this out:
The website is in english and arabic language, so its also perfect for you.
Location: very close to Beirut.
And you even could buy there the Makro Racer, which I really can recommend.
Or you may find there some water-proven detector for the sea and for diving.
Just contact the customer service and perhaps you even can get special prices
or second hand metal detectors.

What about mechanical probing? For example knitting needles, or a bicycle spoke screwed into a simple handle. That may help you find 'hot spots', and then use the spade and sieve. Bottle diggers use spring-steel probes to 'listen' for glass bottles, maybe this may be adapted? It's cheap, and worth a try. Spring steel can be salvaged from the bead hoop of vehicle tyres (bicycle / car). Sometimes it's too thin, but it can be 1mm+.

Hi Hammerhead,
thank you for the pictures. Here you can see your hometown Alexandria on a very old map from almost 2000 years ago:
To built a metal detector, you also can search at google for:
"simple metal detector circuit"
You might find some BFO construction manual (Beat Frequency Oscillator) which works like some modified AM-radio.
This is really very simple to built. It has no discrimination but for the beginning its better than nothing.
Personally spoken I would look to find a way to get some already complete metal-detector.
Go to the docks and ask someone to bring you a MD from Greece or Italy.
Or go to the border where the neighbor-country has more free laws.
Don't you have any relatives in other foreign countries so you can order some detector to their address?
Another question is: how good are your electronic-skills?
Because if they are very good you can create with the parts of almost any broken electronic device
something. Rip apart some old DVD-player or VCR-recorder.
And if you are very afraid of problems you better use a small hand-held metal-detector.
You can order them from China for 10 dollars - very cheap. coins: 10cm , maximum: 30cm.
I'm shure you will find a way to get a metal-detector because you have proven already
being a very creative person. Its just a question of time.
