    I have checked as you suggest, two give a reading of < 1v all the others read 0v. Will pick up a new one tomorrow and try not to fry it.

    check those 'checked' 78l05's BEFORE soldering AGAIN. do NOT connect RED positive wire from the batts to GND pins of the stabs

    Thank you all for your input.
    The batteries are correct, the case is wired to suit them in this orientation. Around 12v.
    On the HH PCB I am getting -5.88v at pin 2 on IC1 and 10.02v on pin 3 of IC2, 0v at pin 2 of IC2 and 0.29v on pin 1. This is the 4th time I have swapped out IC2. Getting good practice at desoldering.
    I am sure the regulators I have are not working as they should, maybe I buggered them while testing, a couple did go up in smoke. Anyway I shall keep at till I sort it
    I did successfully build a working Surf PI last year and thought I might try and extend myself. I really do not know much about electronics but it keeps my mind active.

    You haven't exactly chosen the easiest project to start your exploration of metal detector technology.
    The Hammerhead is not a design you should tackle until you understand the basics. It was never intended as a project for beginners. I would suggest starting off with something much easier, especially as you seem to be struggling with getting a simple linear power supply to work properly.

    I have connected the positive lead to ground because that is how it is connected on the Hammerhead.

    you do something wrong. in HH schrmatic 2 pin of 78l05 connects to GND (+BATT) but it does supply from 7660 that gives MORE voltage.
    ie on INPUT of the stab MORE voltage GOES than on +BATT -!
    while you try check the stab in CLASSIC schematic view but do all wrong. DO ALL ACCORDING THE DATASHEET ON THE STAB DO NOT REFFERING
    ON HAMMERHEAD SCHEMATIC
