simple desing ,perhaps not very strong in deph detection,we could perhaps changing too the display by 2x16 or 7 segments????
look too the entire site ,there is lot of other metal detector scheme .some of them a known but i haven t already see some of them (thinks they are old desing ,perhaps bfo,or ib ???)

Transistor KT3102 any letter index, it works in mode key, and the gain is not important, since the transistor can be replaced with another analogous N-P-N. ATmega8-16Mhz microcontroller can clocked from the internal RC-oscillator at the maximum frequency, and the speed in dynamic mode can significantly deteriorate, so I recommend all the same to put the quartz resonator.
