Has there been any research in detectors for metals id, with A/I neural networking? My son is a software engineer and seems to think this route might be a good way to go to identify different metals a detector is signaling on.

You need to gather more information about the target.
It's not the problem of computing the target type but getting more information out of the signal just because you can't compute something that isn't there. -
This is the only one I know of that has done any Neural Network experiments for metal ID.
