  • Radioshack Discovery 3 questions

Hello All, I am newly retired and wish to get going in metal detecting. I bought a RadioShack Discovery 3 unit at a garage sale. It looks brand new and seems to work but I have no paperwork on it and unfortunately, RadioShack took down their site that contained all their manuals. I am in need of the operating manual or at least a copy of same. This looks like a fairly good unit and I want to take advantage of all it's features. Can anybody help with some info or at least a direction to get some info? My wife says me staying in all day is not going to work. I need to get out with this unit and get to work. Please help if you can. Thanks...Mark Z Lowell Indiana

Discovery 3 or Discovery 3000? Most likely made by First Texas, if you can post a photo I can find the right manual.

i believe it is Big Bud Pro re-named for selling in RadioShack shops net.

Yes, it's a variant of the Big Bud Pro, so it predates when First Texas bought out Bounty Hunter. Here's the closest manual I can find:

Thanks a bunch Carl-NC. that does looks just like mine except mine does not have the meter like the Big Bud Pro. I am sure the operation is the same so that should get me going in the right direction. Now I am off and running. And thanks to kt35 as well for the research. This is a great group. I will be monitoring this group for future developments....Mark Z

The Big Buds were designed by George Payne and are regarded as very capable detectors by those who owned them. I never had one so I can't say.

I am attaching the manual of the Discovery 3 as provided by the Radio Shack.

                  Hope it helps somehow.

I remember seeing a patent for this design. I think it was by George Payne. Yes. But this one looks quite different to the big bud pro circuit.

Hello friends. Request for help with a repair. I got a used Dixcovery 3, but unfortunately it's not detecting anything. It's turning on and making a noise like an out-of-tune radio. A constant hiss. I've already replaced the volume potentiometer, which was faulty, and I believe the power/mode, Disc.notch, and Auto.notch switches are also faulty. When I turn them, the device sometimes doesn't turn on and stays muted. After turning the knob several times, it eventually turns on. I'm trying to post internal photos of the PCB here, but I'm having trouble. I'll keep trying. I appreciate anyone who can give me an idea of what might be causing this problem. Please click on this link. It was the only way I could show the images. Thank you.

I would spray contact cleaner on the controls and work them a bit, see if that solves the problem.
