OMG a Tunnel Diode
I tried to buy one many years ago and learned that they are (almost) non existant.
Just for Fun i did a Google search for 1N3716 and found a Seller with 4 in Stock for "only" $ 27.98 each.

10 tunnel diodes at US$ 29.99. 1N3714 type. Gold plated pins.
In the article I posted in zip author refer that he use the 1N3716 because he has this type, "near his hands". He believe that other type can work here.
