Overlap is not existing all the time, only when Disc 2 is adjusted fully clockwise and Disc 1 fully counterclockwise, pretty rare situation and in most of the possible cases undesirable.
Because; why would you wanted to adjust Disc 1 that low anyway? You will decide whether to "transfer" Al foil in low tone range or to keep it in high tone range. But if you rise Disc 2 to accept Al foils and lower Disc 1 not to reject Al foil - than you will hear both tones at the same time.
Clean division on colored and irons are achieved very simply; both Disc potentiometers are to be set to minimum, counterclockwise.
If Disc 2 stays at minimum (counterclockwise) than you have remained Disc 1 to play with it. From that point it is the same situation as on TGSL. Fe block will sound on only irons and Disc block will accept/reject according to position of Disc 1.
So there is also interesting situation to hear low tones and irons and not to hear nothing bellow Disc1 position, in this case Al foil.
Cool stuff! Make it and experiment, new world of possibilities will open to you!

Chart is not ideal, just showing approximated potentiometers ranges.
There is one pretty illustrative example of how this work:
Al foil accepting and rejecting - or "transferring" it from "colored" to "irons".
If Disc 2 is set to 6 and Disc 1 is set to 5 - than Al foil detection will give lower tone, same like on irons.
    Why?
Because with Disc 2 set on 6 (and over), FE block will start to accept colored alloys up to end of overlap zone on the sketch. Therefore low tone will appear in speaker.
To prevent also higher tone to appear in speaker; Disc 1 is set to 5, the point from which Disc block will start to reject Al foils.
Disc 1 is functioning the same as Disc on TGSL, so; good phase relations are settled exactly when tiny Al foil is fully rejected at Disc set to 5.
In case Al foil (so as tiny silver and gold) are wanted - Disc 1 is set bellow 5 and will be accepted as well. Than Disc 2 is better to be adjusted fully anticlockwise, to prevent also indicating it with lower tone.

This is just one simple and illustrative example.
Many interesting combinations can be achieved with different potentiometers setups.
Along with Disc pots, there are also Sense pots which can be adjusted different and also included in variety of possible combinations.
Maximum Sense at Disc block along with minimum Sense at Fe block will provide additional good behavior in searching only for colored alloys and better suppressing of iron signals...etc...etc..
It is only up to operator and his demands.

To clear up about "Disc" potentiometers ranges at IGSL.
I hope this chart will explain:

    Good job Petravka!
PCB seems a bit modified, increased in sizes.

    hello petravka

where did you place your power supply (batteries)
inside detector box or extern in a separate box

    photos?

    thx

    Noooooo!
    Of course not!
    As WM6 stated:
"...But digital is not saying its last word, and combined solutions are possible too..."
    I agree.

SMT or not.. doesn't really matter , but power drain must be considered more seriously later, in time, as eventual upgrades appear.
Even now is to high; 65-70mA is way much for such device!
The other day i made VDI (although i said i will not) and connected it on IGSL.
It is working... and it is working nice.
So it is temptation to include it in final design.
Yet, overall power drain risen to 110mA !!! Without backlight. With backlight it can go up to 160mA (depends on intensity, which can be regulated via highwatt resistor)....
    So...
one way or another... IGSL must be "rearranged" to carry more upgrades and remain "economical" !

    Why?
Analogue signal is ALWAYS carrying more informations than any kind of digital signal! (talking about md's)
You may sample it at any rate - still it will stay "sampled", if you understand what i mean...
Problem in processing analogue signal is not in how much informations it can care - but in accuracy and complexity of processing it.
That's where uPC's appear as more logical choice.
But still main fact will remain unbeatable: analogue signal is carrying much more informations! (md's...don't take this generally)
That's why i don't like much to think about "DSP".....at least not yet.
Another reason is because i am amateur and can not afford (nor have enough knowledge) to "play" more with it.
So, naturally, i am turned to think only about "analogue" solutions...
(i am sure some people will laugh much on this... but what can i do?)
