My particular interest is finding "only" gold jewelry in dry dirt/sand . I'm confused when i read about various metal detectors having different frequencies. Some are advertised as having a frequency of 5 khz while another is advertised at 14 khz or higher. Is there an optimum frequency when only searching for gold jewelry?

High frequencies do better on small gold due to skin effect. Most VLF nugget detectors run at 50-70kHz which, technically, isn't VLF. There is no such thing as an "only gold" detector, though.

So a detector made for gold nugget hunting is theoretically more sensitive towards a gold ring than a general type detector?

Gold rings are often much easier to detect than nuggets or necklace chains, so typical coin detectors do pretty well with most gold rings. But a specialty nugget detector will generally do better on most jewelry.

What sort of "sand"? Do you intend to use it as beach detector?

I intend at first to use a "gold detector" for rings only in dry sand at the beach. Possibly in the future wet sand at the beach may be a consideration.

Then you need to look for so called "beach detector", cause not all "nugget detectors" are suitable for such purpose.
