Thank Moodz I did not realize their was so much sensitivity to this topic, sorry to stir that all up. I am going away for the next few weeks. When I get back I will take a look at all this and see if I can make sense of it.

I will have some more time in the coming days to add more detail to a useful project build document.
    Thanks Moodz!
I'm sure there's going to be a lot of interest in this project.

Ian, I am truly sorry about the family issues, and they are still ongoing. I think about that project practically every day (still have the STM docs sitting on the unused half of my king sized bed...the stm board starting me in the face whenever I sit down at the computer at the house. It is so frustrating. And the real rub, is that I have to do everything now, both what I normally do and what the soon to be ex wife did.) so my time is even more limited....I feel like my head is going to explode sometimes.

One more thing red brick the a true test whether detector can cope with serious mineralization ,I repeatedly upheld !To my pi detectors and with GPX and SD series .Test with Ferrite not a serious test and it is not safe that the detector working where there's a little mineralization .

I conducted several big projects so far, and had to do it all with people of various degrees of commitment. Most of those projects came to fruition, this way or another. The key ingredient was that other people were obliged to participate, or else.
This is a completely different environment. There is no "or else" moment, and instead there is plenty of "what's in it for me". Unfortunately many people believe there are untold riches in the next metal detector project, and it is not so. It is true that the vast majority of detectors on market fetch prices that exceed the combined value of used parts by crazy factor when compared to other sorts of electronics, but it is not said that such high price margins will ever pull your own project out of the red. This is still a niche market.
Moodz' detector is his own child. That said, he is the only one deciding its faith.

Hi I have been very much involved in a group project and if members are not 100% committed to the project it will fall over as you need expertise in different areas and you seem to find the one expertise level you need is the one that the member involved gets either too involved with their own projects or just can not be bothered or has family problems which preclude them from participating in our Tinkerer GG project this has happened and we have been trying for three years to finalize it I am no electronic wizz but I do not seem to have too much problem making SMD boards even with my less than good eye sight but I agree a build document is the only way to go but that is hard to achieve as every body has different skill levels.

If Moodz does decide to publish his design I would be keen to build it and test it with the other project I am testing.

    Regards, Ian.

Well since this a MOODZ thread that is product I was talking about. I put product In quotes only to indicate no real (salable) product is intended, rather a project that we could all benefit from.
It might be best to start the journey near the end rather than reinvent the wheel.
if anybody is interested, and MOODZ willing to release his design, then indicate so here.

Last night I was thinking about this and a thought occurred. There are two general types of people on these forums.
1.Those that are idea people and don't generally build much.
2.Those that generally just do stuff and don't let tiny details encumber them.
Very occasionally you will find folks who do both well, but it is rare.

BOTH TYPES ARE GOOD and can work together.

Assuming that we agree that there is real desire to have project finish and produce a useful "product" how do we proceed?
Start by finding out for what " useful product" you find enough people who are willing and capable of helping getting the work that is needed, done.

Well, if it is something as un-complex as football and all you need is a bunch of halfwits willing to break each others' legs...
(no offence to the actual football players - I too do many stupid things for fun)
Many managers still believe that whatever works for cashiers must also be good for engineers, but trouble is that it is a wrong kind of discipline that quashes creativity. Most of the managing schemes do not work for engineers for that particular reason. It all boils down to cultivation of fight or flight reflexes, so creative people only become creative in fighting or flighting and not the actual creative work.
Basically all the managing schemes are developed for stupid. Those contribute because they must. Creative people contribute because they can, and because it is fun. Remove the fun part and you rendered them to stupid.

No offence meant and no offence taken.
Time is a very precious commodity. One person only has a limited amount of it. Research and development of new technology demands an immense amount of work and time. Only if that amount of time is divided up onto many persons, a new technology product can be made within an acceptable time frame.
Many efforts have been made on this forum to create groups to work on R&D. None have survived the challenges.
    But there is always hope.
