Yes Aziz, agree. I overlooked the fact that those cheaper versions require ATX power supply.

10 - 15W consumption mean about 1A current and for full day hunting about 12AH lead acid battery.

On the other side, one could make a synchronized ATX power supply module, which would lower the total EMI noise. Could be useful but it will be an expensive solution.

Ok, no DSP board required. Let's keep in the PC world. It makes everything cheap and easy.

Yes. An external USB sound card. The internal one is for beeping sound.

It seems, that a pure embedded and cheap PC solution is feasable. The whole OS and software could boot from an 1 GB USB Stick. No display, no hard disk, no keyboard, no mouse,... required at all. Just turn on and go.

The power consumption is around 10-15 W I think. The 12 V input voltage seems also to be very convenient. I think, we will see more better PC boards soon. Let's wait and see.

Holly cow!, why developing an expensive DSP board, if there is a much more powerful and cheap PC board available? It's even cheaper than the netbooks.

    Maybe cheaper here:

    Loadspeaker Cable for TX Coil

    Hi all,

interestingly, the novel ground balance is very forgiving to the coil wire choice. It does not seem to be critical at all. I have used my loadspeaker cable for a TX coil configuration and it even works without any shielding.
Without the novel ground balance, it detects my hand and hot rocks of course.

    TX coil:
Coil wire: 2 x 2.5mm² (very cheap and thick loadspeaker cable, Litz but strands aren't enamelled, 10 m length)
    Windings: 26 turns
    Diameter: approx. 22 cm
    Inductivity: approx. 257 µH
Coil bundle thickness: 16 mm (very thick coil)
Resistance: Bloody low, I can not measure it.

The loadspeaker cables are much cheaper than the enamelled magnet wires or Litz wires (compared to their weight). Could be a good and cheap alternate. I will give them a go and will order heavy ones (4mm² or 6mm²) next time.

    Some progress

    Hi all,

I have finished some parts of the IB-PI detector. Unfortunately, the front plate is broken and is not looking very nice. Anyway, I have still the original Aluminium plates for the final version. Look at the monster coil plug. It's just a professional audio speaker plug. But I need it for very high coil currents (up to 50 A).
I have seperated the RX input from the TX output. It is easier for two box configurations to seperate them.

I can start soldering the circuit in the coming days now.

    Cheers,
    Aziz

Aziz, can you say how do you wire this (by flat cable?):
No, this is only for power supply and mechanical connections of the boards.
BTW, this has nothing to the with the IB-PI project.

The IB-PI project will be realized on a 160x100 mm PCB board (Euro-Format).

that's not the real problem. To make the front and back planes, I need some special tools (drill, saw and so on). I also might need some more parts (other package types). I also need to build the inductors, coil leads (heavy thick one), coil, etc..
    Could delay things a bit.

The IB-PI project needs an induction balanced coil type. The simplest one is just a DD type.

What is important is that we do no plan too heavy coil. What sort of coil do you plan to use mono or only IB as project name? I ever prefer mono.

    Finalizing IB-PI Project

    Hi guys,

I have started to finish the IB-PI project (first finalized prototype). I am putting/searching all the parts together from several orders and trying to fit them into the case/PCB. This seems to be quite difficult to achieve. I will probably need an additional PCB board (sandwiched).

Yes, it's in metal detector domain. But has less to do with my current projects here. I am quite sad, that it is delaying the current projects heavily.
I usually make some progress on the projects if I am stucking with the other work (and I do it quite often). And sometimes, a new idea initiates a big progress. I should mention, that the krauts attack also demotivates me sometimes (well, I have fired back this time).

But the projects here are just for fun and straight forward in concepts. Nevertheless, they will lead to some success too. I have new ideas, how I can get it working with low bandwidth ADC's (sound cards).
