im new to coil making so am a little confused ! the only pin diagram i can fine for a mono coil has 2 pins tied together and the other 3 together . is there only a single coil or are the transmit and receive coils somehow tied together

The mono coil only has one winding. The DD coil has two windings and the pins are not tied together.

Which detector are you using ? The best coil largely depends on the type of detector and how you intend to use it.
