Ha... just last week I made a test with ferrite rods... it does not work ! Used 20 cm feritte rods, this gave a very very low sensetive
What works.. the metal you can find in transformators, is some Mu metal (not so good).
Best is some vitrovac metal. You can find this metal in protection strips used in shops and books. I have found some good Vitrovac Mu metal in a toroid .It is not so easy to recover it from the toroid, the metal is very hard so it breaks fast. I made a 15 cm coil that gave a good freq. change when moving a 1l. paint can at some 3 meters..! But the problem is that the coil is also very North South sensitive...
I made this FGM copy's just to see how it works.. If you want to make a magnetometer ..think it is easyer and cheaper to bay them from Speake and Co. http://www.speakesensors.com/
