    I will always wonder if Dave Johnson designed a pair of his RX input stages because there were no adequate opamps available... or was his goal to tune the RX so precisely that at that point no existing opamp (or existing but expensive one) would be worth it?

    SMW... a very popular DIY around here, very rudimentary but with phenomenal results on real terrain, has RX taken from the 1235 model (and I believe the same RX is on several other models).
    All the quality of work and the power of that detector depends on the degree of selection of quality transistors for RX. (BC327-40 & BC337-40 with hFe over 400 was the initial requirement)
    While I had enthusiasm; i tried replacing that RX on several occasions with some opamps, there were results, but never as good as the DJ's solution.

    LF357 was mostly used in older PI projects.
    But the biggest "noise" was about FelezJoo PI. In that detector, it is very difficult to replace LF357 with an alternative.
    Because the author himself admitted; he wrote the code tuning it specifically to the LF357 characteristics.
    In less demanding PI projects; I personally found the OP37 to be extremely good.

    i think you mistaken, Slew Rate is 25V/us. you must always to learn DATASHEETS before to offer.
    The key indicators of an operational amplifier mainly include: supply voltage, input offset voltage, input offset current, open-loop gain, bandwidth, slew rate, common mode rejection ratio, power supply rejection ratio, input impedance, output impedance, noise density, and operating temperature range.
    Comparing the slew rate and bandwidth, the solution you provided has sufficient slew rate, but the bandwidth is lower than LF357.

    In the "good old days", when there was not so much choice of opamps; people made their own opamp with a few good transistors.
    The LF357 is really hard to find and difficult to replace in some applications.
    There are alternatives, but they are harder to come by and are much more expensive.

    It depends on how the opamp is used and which specs are important for that application. For example, a preamp needs good bandwidth but usually not a JFET input. A demod might need the JFET input but not so much BW. What circuit is this for?

    There are indeed many fake LF357 in the Chinese market, and unscrupulous merchants have refurbished other single operational amplifiers into LF357 for sale. I am also very helpless.
    So seek alternatives.
    After checking the manual, I think OPA604 is very close to LF357.
