Yes, that's absolutly correct and that's also the reason, why I suggested in #645...
..Fine tuning should be done, in final setup your machine, with rod, handle, coil..... and of course in a metal free environment with little electrical interferences.
Well, I have good experiences with this setup, because I think so the rod became to a part of the coil and It's not a moved target.

This is only true if you don't allow the stem to move in relation to the coil. This includes keeping the angle between the stem and the coil constant. If the stem is made of metal, it will also affect the slope of the RX signal, and desensitize the detector to lower conductivity targets.Originally posted by blobber View PostWell, I have good experiences with this setup, because I think so the rod became to a part of the coil and It's not a moved target.

My previous comment regarding low conductivity targets is only relevant to PI detectors. For a VLF detector, variations in ground mineralization while sweeping the coil, can create variations in the eddy currents induced in the metal stem. These eddy current variations can look like a weak target, and produce a phantom signal. Also, any movement between the stem and the coil will cause chatter. Some cheap low-end detectors do actually have metal stems all the way to the coil, but they get away with it because of their lack of sensitivity, and the fact that they are nearly always used in areas of low mineralization.Originally posted by blobber View PostBut it should work, when the rod is fixed always in the same position.

hello blobber,
i can suggest you a carbon fibre monopod, then you have no Problems with metal
but if you take for example a triopo tl-30 made of alu you can easy replace the lower rod, most they have metrical step 12mm, 14mm or 16mm

Wooden (additionally impregnated) lower part i pretty good too:
