    Are you using tl072 instead of 5534???? It sounds not a good substitute to me. Are you changing the passive elements when doing this?

    Yes, build a fast coil of spiral design. Use enamel wire 0.4 to 0.6 mm. 30 turns. You will see big gain in depth of 3 to 4 inches more. Shield the coil. Use Tl072 .

    I've checked the surf yesterday, stand by current was around 50ma. When target detected it goes 65-70 depending on the strenth of the signal. Will try later putting CMOS timer to see how much difference it will make. As per the Cuda i cant say - still working on it but from what i remember 7660 maximum current was 100ma, same as 78L05 isnt it? So it get screwed both the ways:-)

    The 7660 is only used to generate a negative supply, and the switching current is drawn directly from the battery, so the load on the 7660 is minimal in comparison to the total current. The problems that kill the 7660 are described in the Geotech Baracuda Rev-A Build Document. But this is the wrong thread to be commenting on the Baracuda.
