  • Garrett Grand Master Hunter CX II

I came across this oldie from 1989 completely unplanned!
    Almost mint condition.
Never opened, never repaired. Does not work. Does not respond to bench power. Because the battery contacts were corroded, so I tried to start the machine from external 9v.
Nothing "smoky", nothing "burnt"... nothing can be seen just by looking.
But the most suspicion falls on the flat cable. Two lines on one cable have a changed color.
I haven't checked yet, but that cable comes from the front panel. It is very possible that those two leads are connected to the On/Off soft button.
Because when I try to turn it on; Nothing happens. Current draw is 0mA.
I would have fixed everything by now... but there are 6 totally spoiled kittens who as soon as they see me sit down to work; they immediately jump up and climb on top of me,
start "fixing" everything on the table with their paws!
And it is impossible to work!
I got used to it before, this is a short period in their growth, so I postponed the service of this detector until late autumn, when the "beasts" will grow and become different in behavior.
For now, the detector will stand as a decoration until conditions are created to fix it.
Ok, the collection is slowly being created! I have a White's 5000 GEB/D in mint condition and now this one.
But I have to mention one detail on the machine that totally blew me away! I admit that I have not encountered this on other machines before!
"Moving scale, VU scale" or "meter scale" ... it's common to fade over the years.
It fades and spoils the aesthetics, spoils the impression and satisfaction.
Do you know what they thought of in Garrett? This is genius!
The metal aluminum thin sheet on which the "scale" is printed has the same front and back!
Just unscrew two small screws and turn that tray! The other side is with strong and clear colors and inscriptions, as if the detector left the factory yesterday!
Such a small detail and so ingenious! Good old school! They thought of everything! This shows great respect for customers! Something that is so rare to see today!

          The next thing worth emphasizing!
Look at the build quality level of this machine!
We're talking about something that hit the market in 1989!
Hey! And look at what we are mostly doing today on the forum!
This reminds me of the story of the pyramids!
Today, everyone is wondering how those ancient "backward" peoples built the pyramids in Giza?
The new generations have so little knowledge and even less respect for some of the older generations!
          What can a man do?
Just to be silent and from time to time to state the progress of human stupidity and the terribly steep line of decline of human intelligence.
          Maybe I'm too strict? Naaaah!

Good luck with the kittens - there was a time when I used to get regularly beaten up by a gang of tiny cats who thought I existed for their entertainment! They would climb all over me and attack anything that moved. I like kittens as much as the next person, but you don't know what fear is until you've had one shoot up the inside of your trouser leg...

Oh I know and I've experienced it all, trust me!
My whole body looks like someone used me as a target for shooting with a shotgun!
I studied the psychology of cats.
The 6 of them consider me a mother, a father, an object for climbing, an object for sharpening claws, a "high" object on which they should stay and observe the surroundings from there, etc...
I am the central figure in their lives right now.
But (fortunately) it doesn't last long, by autumn 6 of them will grow enough and start to "become independent".
I've been this way before, I have experience.
Who once start liking cats (I assume other animals too); it is a path of no return, forever, for life.
They become part of the family and "personality".
I can't imagine what my life would be like without them.
They are my "therapy" that enrich my life and make it much more beautiful.
Despite all the hardships that go along with it.
It is the house that suffers the greatest destruction!
There is no more "human order" in the house. "Cat order" is now in effect. And we are all guided by that.

I had such a device in 2012... the sensitivity is very low.. uncomfortable, etc. I walked with him several times and threw him in the trash.. ) and if I'm not mistaken, the device was screaming at almost any color signal - a coin!!!

I don't know anything about the performance of this detector, so I can't judge it.
I took it because I am a detector lover and I want to have a collection.
There aren't many video demos on Youtube. Because it's an old model.
But from what I've seen so far; not to be underestimated.
Of course experiences are different, not only for this model but for all other detectors that have ever existed.
Forums like this survive on those different experiences.
I've had about a dozen different Garrett models from various time periods. Not one has ever disappointed me.
Garrett is a mark of quality, a brand, a name. They are not kidding.
So your post means very little to me.
I rely solely on my own experiences. I respect other opinions. Everyone has the right to their opinion.

I had the same one. It did not fail. It was a super detector.
But I had to sell it because then I fell into debt. I really regret selling it.
Looks like you didn't have much luck with the detectors?
It happens that someone is chased by bad luck and comes across several problematic devices.
I also had such periods in my life. But after the rain, the sun rises again!

I switched to homemade analog devices 10 years ago and the sun is in perfect order))) Recently, I found a copper coin with a diameter of 45mm at a depth of 35-37 cm in the chernozem... with a great loud and clear response.

Relatively speaking, the "problem" with the newer and better Garrett models (GTI series and newer) is in fairly rigorous discrimination.
Exclusively made according to American standards and for there soils and types of finds.
But everything changed with the appearance of the newer ACE and AT models.
With the GTI 2500 (I've had 3 of them so far) it only makes sense to work with "Zero" discrimination (audio is always there and the LCD still indicates Disc) or in All Metal mode.
GTI 2500 with large coil (can't remember model now) and in AM mode is one of the deepest VLF I/B ever!
I found Roman coins at depths of more than 45-50 cm!
Hard to believe... but I have no reason to make it up.
Of course these are isolated and rare cases.
This is not possible on all types of soil, and today it is already a fairy tale for small children.
Those are the times that have passed and will not return.
Just like the Deus 1 blew me away the first month I bought it... back in 2012.
I found a couple of very small medieval silver coins at depths of 32-34cm! With coil 34x28. Today it is impossible.
Something has changed in nature. Deus 1 is becoming less and less usable.
Although last year I put new batteries in both the coils and the remote.
But in its behavior it becomes increasingly restless and nervous.
I notice a drastic increase in industrial "fog" even in remote places deep in the "wilderness".
And that "fog" spreads in the spectrum very widely and no change in operating frequency helps.
I am all the more delighted with the Minelab Vanquish 340... which is low end, budget, cheap and modest... far shallower than the Deus 1... but super calm and quiet!
And it finds tiny coins where Deus 1 can't see them at all.
For me, the "depths" of the detector do not play any role. Totally wrong concept.
A mistake made by many who want to convince everyone else with their funny ads that only their detector is super deep!
Even 20 years ago I thought it was very stupid! Today, it's hard for me to even laugh at such idiotic "testing" and advertisements.
Of course... the new generations don't have any knowledge, so that nonsense is primarily intended for such "customers".
