    I suspect they aren't magnets, but rather fluxgate sensors. We'll never know without more info.

        I'm 100% sure these are magnets, and strong ones, aligned with the same poles so they repel each other. There's a winding on the outside of the coil. This is an industrial plate detector used on conveyor belts, combine harvesters (corn chopper). THIS DETECTOR DOES NOT DETECT NON-FERROUS METALS, ONLY STEEL.​

          This device may work like a electric guitar pick-up. A permanent magnet creates a static field, when moving steel (strings) passes through the field it is modulated into the pick-up coil. That's my guess.

            That's my guess.
            That's what I was thinking, the answer to my question that is not respond to non magnetic metal is confirming that, no answer to all my qwestions = ....... = no more info.
            Long time ago I was working on such detector.​
