  • garrett gtxa 500 eats batteries

My gtxa 500 goes through a set of battries overnight with detector off. also uses them up quick when I use it too. Any ideas?

    Thanks JC77

One thing is certain ... there should be no current drain from the batteries when the detector is switched off. I presume you are using alkalines and not rechargeable batteries.

Have you tried monitoring the current drain with a meter?

Does the battery holder have a short?

Unplug the battery pack from the detector and see if they discharge.

        Using alkalines, new battery packs.

Do you mean check current of holders out of detector or the detector itself?

Pull the battery pack from the detector and check the Ohms on the connector to the detector ! Every thing turned off!

            It should be Infinite.

First check that the battery holder is not the problem, then if this seems ok, check if current is being drawn with the detector switched off.

The GTAx 500 looks similar to my GTAx 1000, so I would suspect there's a fault with the electronics rather than a simple short circuit, otherwise the detector would probably not even switch on.

If battery holder was short probem there will be fire and smoke not only discharge.

Known problem by electronically switch off. Helps only a hammer, or the installation of mechanical switches.

A bit of Gick in the right spot could discharge the batteries over time.

Yes teoretically could, but you say short for such small conductivity?

clean as a pin. no shorts on battery pack

                            As I suspected.

How much current drain is there when the detector is supposedly switched off?

Whats the best way to check the current with the detector turned off? The detector has 2 battery packs?
