Shame about Portuguese beaches. Anyone thinking about Cyprus, forget it. There used to be little problem on the land, and no problem on the beach or wading, not so now. Total ban on detecting on the land and in the sea. Some beaches are o.k. but only with written permission for which to need to apply on the appropriate application form, and supply proof of no criminal convictions. Penalty is 3 years in prison and/or 30,000 euros fine (plus they will probably confiscate your detector so the police can use it themselves !). Check it out at www.mcw.gov.cy/da then look under legislation, then The antiquities (amendment) law 2012 for details and form. Justification is just in case there might be another submerged city like Pavlopetri. (Check it out, fascinating).

Yes, it will work without a shield, but you will notice that your detector will react to ground minerals. For a simple shield you can use graphite spray. it is not cheap, about 12 euro for a can...

The coil I want to installed in a coil housing from Georgi Zehlev.
But I still do not know how I can shield the coil. So I will only test "without anything." (Resin, etc) Maybe the Surf PI works even without shield ....
    we'll see

    My Surf PI

I also bought the fine kit from Silverdog . It was difficult for me to find a suitable housing for the circuit . So I built it myself. Made of aluminum sheet.
There was a problem when installed in the housing. Every time the circuit was installed - nothing worked. I was almost in despair ....
I have searched persistently for the cause.
    It was the metal housing.
The headphone jack must not be connected to the "ground" (metal housing). After isolation of the Headphone jack -- the Surf PI works perfectly!
I love it. Nice small and fits perfectly to the detector - rod.

Thanks for the cable info, I have not seen RG6 with a white outside sheath on it before,
Just wondering why the Portuguese legislation does not allow detection on the beaches ?

    Thanks,
thats a great result on your gold ring for a 200mm coil , what coax did you use to connect the coil ?
your video should be used as an example of a well built surf Pi.

    Hi,

I have measured the speaker output, and I only have got 0.1Vdc, when metal moves over the coil....
In the above shematic, the ground simbol goes to my negative battery terminal...???
The +Vmotor connected to the positive battery terminal...???
I have a 12V battery powering my Surf PI .... this probably will burn my vibrating device (cell phone vibromotor)

    Any help apreciated
    Regards

    Hi again,

I'm looking to modify my PI.
Instead of having a speaker / buzzer when the metal detector finds metal, I would like a vibration device like cell phone vibrating micro motor.
I searched the forum, and I found this scheme .... but I'm having trouble applying it to the Surf PI
Can anyone explain it better...? I only have with me theTIP116 .....not the TIP122

    Hi there everyone!

Nezocas, I'm new here as I've just decided to build my own metal detector.

As a fellow Portuguese national, living in Portugal, I was wondering if you've tested your machine already? And how did you discovered we can't metal detect on the beaches?

Anyway, great job you did with the surf! I was undecided as to get one of these kits or not but you've made up my mind!

    Cheers and happy detecting!

HI nezocas, I have made the surf too. It is a very tolerant design for different coils and a lot of fun. I have had a couple of samll roman coins with my one. It had a 7" unsheilded coil.

I made a 10" coil and shielded it and the machine was noisey and squeely with that coil - my experience is no shield is better!
