what smaller coins you mean? i am not in course of UK ancient coins. russian people use 5 kopeek of USSR, some coins of XIX century. smaller is silver coins of XVI-XV century...

I meant small coin in the video

With my Bandido and there is a big difference with coin size and testing. With a large coin it can be touching a rusty nail and still be detected. However a cut half, sixpence or sovereign penny the best I can do is 1/2 the coil diameter or 3"

It makes a lot of sense, and is consistent with the results I get in my test garden. Even small ferrous stuff on the surface can mask out coins a few inches deep.

However, there is a variation on the wood, nail, coin test that involves placing the coin at a lower level than the nails. If you try that, you'll be surprised at some of the detectors that will fail dismally. This variation is consistent with the comments in the video, and with testing in the ground.

Kinda gone off topic and taking away from the Quasar which looks interesting. When I have some time will read through the threads on the other forum and make a decision whether to build one.

I start a thread on here about this test. People who have identical size coils DD and concentric found that the DDs past the test and the concentric failed. I could not test for myself as I only have a 10" DD and 8" concentric for my IDX and 6" concentric for my Bandido.


To find target as close as possible to iron requires two thing. Good separation and quick recovery. As far as I can tell separation is purely due to the coil and recovery the detector.

Back to the Quasar it looks to have good recovery and sensitivity to small targets so may well be a nice project for me.
