also using the known signal i have set 1 and 2 probes up as per the setup so that the o-scope displays the correct value.

so can i ask that you point me in the right direction? eg point A to B for probe 1 AND Point C to D for probe 2, then what to look for and to do?

Ok ch 1 hot side to U1 pin 3, ch2 to U1 pin 6. Ground lead for both channels will almost always be on signal ground which should be coil shield or battery minus connection ( they should be the same). Adjust the controls so the smaller pulse is 2 div wide and fills the top half of the screen. Do the same with CH2. Set the trigger to channel one. You may have to adjust trigger slope for plus or minus slope so you can display the whole narrow pulse width. Tell us what you see or better yet attach images.

Have you tried the known signal first? This is very important to ensure that everything is working correctly.

Another option might be to use the expanding foam cans often used to fills gaps in your house. I have never tried this though and it can be messy.
ok thanks old cart, food for thought i might try the expanding route mabe i can use a small amount in spots and limit the damage!

I am totally unfamiliar with that model. I suggest you start with the very basics. Google X Y Z's of oscilloscope and read it. It will give you a good background about how scopes work, in general. Then hook your scope on a known signal. A 1 KHz square wave is good and often provided on scopes. Adjust the trigger and vertical size and position so the waveform almost fills the screen vertically and is centered on it and is stable every time it repeats. Play with the the horizontal controls that adjust position and size. Horizontal position may also be under the trigger menu. After a while you should have no problems controlling how you capture and display the waveform.
    Key elements
Triggering establishes where on the screen ( vertically and horizontally) the scope places the reference that remains stable.
Vertical controls all vertical attributes of the signal. The key is make the waveform as big as possible without the signal going off the screen.
Horizontal also controls how zoomed in the waveform appears and how it is positioned.
Let us know how this goes.
